Recently I watched Eight Below, based upon the true story of the 1958 ill-fated Japanese expedition to Antarctica inspired the 1983 hit movie Nankyoku Monogatari. Eight Below is the fictional re-imagining of the true events of the 1958 occurrence moved forward to 1993, the last year that sled dogs were used in Antarctica. I thought it was both sad and inspiring to see these dogs try to survive the harsh winter conditions of the Antarctic and the love of their owner who pulls out all stops to try and rescue them.

The story takes place mostly in the picturesque mountains of Antarctica where a research guide, Jerry, has forged a father/child relationship with the eight dogs that pull his sled. The first lighthearted half of the film is chock full of wonderful snowy vistas, mountains and plains as Jerry and his dogs guide an adventurer in search of a meteor crash. The second, heart-wrenching half is a story of survival and perseverance as Jerry and his research team are forced to leave the dogs alone at the base with no means to return due to an approaching storm.

Inspired by a true story, ‘Eight Below’ bears the earmarks from afar of another typical Disney fun family adventure. In reality, the plight of the dogs forced to survive on their own is tough to stomach emotionally even for adults, and especially dog owners. The stranded dogs have no immediate access to food, no shelter and are certainly not immune to death. They are susceptible to injury, pitted against aggressive foes and have no idea if or when Jerry will return. I have a hard time imagining a child not being disturbed by the imagery of a gigantic enraged sea lion emerging from the belly of an orca carcass and biting a chunk out of a dog’s leg.

‘Eight Below’ may appear to be a perfect contender for a family outing but parents should strongly consider keeping young kids away. A necessary uplifting conclusion can’t lift the somber mood imposed through the torturous conditions the dogs were faced to endure for nearly half a year. For adults, far too much human screen time spent away from the dogs only serves to drag out the dog’s fate.

My daughter thankfully, was having a sleep over with her friends and didn't get to watch this show with her brothers who are older and were moved by the dog's plight to tears at times. So this film is not for the faint hearted, but my boys still thought it was worthwhile as it gave them admiration for what the dogs went through and how they survived.

Anupam and Jaya were alright, Abhishek didn't have much screen space so I guess he was okay. But Rani, Kunal, and Konkona's acting was superb!

The story was really good with minor flaws and the outcome was expected, but it still was a very good movie. I teared up

Let's face it, he disowned his daughter more due to an adherence to culture than faith. He was more secular than religious.
well to begin with he was an agha khani. and those people dont even have a masjid, they have a 'jamaat khana' which i see them meeting up at on friday nights. dont know why but thats what they do.

as for how he showed he was a muslim, i think the manner of his dress spoke volumes, plus if you listen to his independence day speech, he mentions it being jumatul vida. in fact, when lord mountbatten told him that after he creates pakistan, he should keep in mind Akbar's treatment of minority, Jinnah replied 'but sir we have the example of our holy prophet and his treatment of minorities to learn from". And if you watch at the begining of the movie, you will see the ignorant mullah's (as always) chastising him for walking around with his sister fatima by his side, to which he replies to them 'did the prophet not have his own wives by his side as well?" Just because you dont see a photograph of someone praying, doesnt mean something is wrong. after all even mubarak of egypt is always shown on tv praying namaz, and we all know what a jahil he is. you shouldnt believe images, because they are nothing more than PR campaigns to begin with. as for his wife's conversion, how they practice it afterwards is between them and god. if you like you can go visit her grave, in the agha khani jamaat khana cemetary in Bombay, India. and lastly, you can't call someone secular, for being a moderate Muslim.

below is the dress of a Muslim. he could have passed for a hyderabadi nawab in the manner in which he was dressed.

Mohammed Ali Jinnah in Hyderabad

"I have one underlying principle in mind: the principle of Muslim democracy. It is my belief that our salvation lies in following the golden rules of conduct set for us by our great lawgiver, the Prophet of Islam."

Quote:
But Pakistanis, though united in their reverence for Jinnah are divided over what kind of society he stood for.

For some, like Senate opposition leader Ataha Zessen, Jinnah was a liberal who wanted to separate religion from the State.

"I think personally that what Mr Jinnah wanted to establish was a separate homeland for the Muslims, and thereby a Muslim state, but not an Islamic state," says Mr Zessen.

"He espoused the cause of a civil society ruled by democratic means, not by dogma."

But others disagree. The Director of Pakistan's Ministry of Religious Affairs, Bashir Hussein Nazim, believes that Jinnah is with the Islamists.

"If we go through his statements, we come to know that he wanted Islam in Pakistan. While writing a letter to Mr Gandhi, he said: "You should know that the Quran is our destination," he countered.

Jinnah: austere image

Pakistanis are divided on what Jinnah intended for the country

Christopher Lee stars in the controversial new film ...

... in which he is shown with a human side

Sunday, September 13, 1998 Published at 15:07 GMT 16:07 UK

World: South Asia

Screening the life of Jinnah

By the BBC correspondent in Islamabad, Owen Bennet-Jones:

Pakistan has just marked the 50th anniversary of the death of Mohammed Ali Jinnah - the founder of the nation. Later this month, a major new film about his life is due to be released.

Intended to change the way the world thinks of Jinnah, the film has turned out to be almost as controversial as the man himself.

In the West, the man is inextricably linked with the partitioning of India, and has tended to get a rather negative press.

Unlike his Indian counterpart, Mahatma Gandhi, he is seen as an austere, unlovable man who broke up the sub-continent to fulfil his own personal ambitions.

But in Pakistan, Jinnah is universally revered as the Quaid-i Azam or Great Leader.

One underlying principle

In 1948, Mohammed Jinnah set out his hopes for the country he had created:

"I have one underlying principle in mind: the principle of Muslim democracy. It is my belief that our salvation lies in following the golden rules of conduct set for us by our great lawgiver, the Prophet of Islam."

While writing a letter to Mr Gandhi, he said: "You should know that the Koran is our destination," he countered.

And the debate over Jinnah will be fuelled later in September when the new movie on the man is launched in Hollywood.

Positive image

Many Pakistanis feel that Richard Attenborough's film "Gandhi" portrayed Jinnah negatively, as austere and aloof.

In the new film, actor Christopher Lee tries to emphasise Jinnah's human side. In one scene, he is shown crying, talking to Muslims who had lost loved ones in the post-Partition violence.

Despite the fact that the film is expected to give a very positive image of Jinnah, Pakistan's government withdrew financial support from the movie.

When scenes were being shot in Pakistan, ministers became afraid that even a sympathetic reassessment of Jinnah would prove highly controversial.

Akhbar Asamed, the film's executive producer, says it is understandable.

"People were nervous. Mr Jinnah affects how people see Pakistan, how people think about Pakistan. And there are 135 million Pakistanis."

Jinnah remains a hero for Pakistanis of all political persuasions.

But, even if the new film contributes to a broader understanding of the man, it's unlikely to settle the debate about his political legacy.

It was not the images I was questioning but rather the lack thereof. What was the most islamic thing he did in his life? In your article about him, the one you posted, it's clear that people's opinions are divided over his views. So what was he got5? What was his original vision for Pakistan? My issue is with people treating him as a religious leader.
...and just why would I want to visit his wife's grave??..

you brought up his wife's conversion to Islam, so i wrote you are more than happy to visit the khoja cemetary in bombay if you like, to see where she is buried.

but i dont know who would see him as a religious leader, because jinnah was not a religious leader, he was a lawyer, a politician, and a political leader. you brought how muslim he was well his writings speak for themselves, he fought for the rights of Muslims, is that not enough for you? maybe if you went and seen how muslims in india are treated you would start to appreciate the efforts he did for the muslims in the pre-partitioned india.i am an indian muslim and im saying this righ tnow, jinnah was right, and was right along, and yes pakistan was made for all muslims, including the muhajars from lucknow, and u.p. and bihar as well. i think its a daam tragedy that so many bihari muslims are not allowed to migrate to pakistan to this very day.

pathergatti is a neighborhood deeep in the heart of the old city of hyderabad, and what i dont get is how kids like you born an raised in this country, cant act like the biggest total fobs, straight out of the deepest ghettos of old city like pathergatti.

the only reason you watch hindu crap outta bollywood is because all the other fobs watch it too. why not watch pakistani media? everything is centered around muslim life.
