City of God

i liked it a lot. i didnt adore it as much as i was hoping to (i'd been waiting forever to see it), but it was really well-done. nice story, excellent cinematography, and skillful editing.

I think what I'm saying isn't that there's so much "Muslim = Terrorist" as much as "Terrorist = Muslim."

The difference being, there are terrorists in the movie. They kidnap Tony Stark try and get him to build a weapon for them. Nowhere in my four times seeing the movie (Yes, I have it on DVD ) do I remember any reference to Muslims or Islam. That's not to say that there definitively are none, but if they aren't there then any association made on that end is an unnecessary leap that isn't what the writers have in mind.

Lastly, as I said, the terrorists aren't even the "real" bad guys in the movie. By the time the movie ends, the terrorists are an afterthought at best, once presented with the "real" adversary.

Creep.

So scary. Didnt sleep in the dark, as usual (poor husband), but this time the light closer to the bedroom was on. Kept on looking towards the door waiting for a rat like squeal (ok im scaring myself again ) and looking around the room for objects that I could use as weapons. The pen was already taken

What? There were no references to Muslims or Islam in Ironman, there were Arabs and Afghans and posibly some Pakistanis. Unless you are a brainwashed sap who thinks all Middle Easterners are terrorists and Muslim...

Azuloscurocasinegro (English title: "Dark Blue Almost Black"

i absolutely LOVED it. a quirky, bittersweet independent film about a bunch of Spanish twenty-somethings trapped in places they dont want to be. the protagonist is a trash collector who can't seem to get a better job, and who has to take care of his invalid father...and um, impregnate his incarcerated brother's girlfriend. at the brother's request

so... yeah. NOT a family movie.
it's pretty hard to find in the US. blockbuster doesnt have it, but netflix does.

Southland Tales - wow what a movie. My friend let me borrow the graphic novel which helps explain alot more of what was going on.

I thought it was wicked. Any Indiana Jones fan would love it.
Yeah, movies don't get a pass from me because of brand name recognition. So I thought it was stupid.

I liked the 80s films, but then, I was a small child at the time. Dunno if I'd like them now.

Machuca

a film about three kids (one wealthy, two from the village) growing up in chile during the time of the US-sponsored coup that overthrew the democratically elected marxist president and replaced him with a brutal dictator. this movie highlights the helplessness of children in a political struggle that extends beyond their understanding, and how little power they might actually have to fight for even the basic things they know are just.

i was really excited about the movie because i feel strongly about this particular incident in history. but the entire first hour of the movie could have been scrapped, and it would have been better. there were some scenes toward the end that were so full of emotional weight that they were excruciating to watch. i wish the entire movie had been more like that, instead.

if you liked the film adaptation of Kite Runner, you might like this. a lot of the themes are similar.
