I agree with you that the kid is portrayed in a heroic manner in the movie and that alot of people identify with his journey and the reasons behind it. But in the end of the movie it becomes clear that he wants to go back to society (he tries to go back, he starts using his real name again, he has flashbacks and dream sequences with his family, etc). But he cant get back to society, he's trapped in the wild and he dies there after coming to these realizations, the culmination of his entire trip. So its pretty tragic
