Re: Movies Watched Recently
so far i got half into the movie. but the download is really slow outta china, and my computer started slowing down due to low memory so i had to reboot. im in the middle of downloading the second half of the movie, where the family arrives in los angeles in 1988. and that scene of the dad working in the gas station after a life of wealth (i told you ladies, money doesnt last forever) was reminicent of that ben kingsly movie where the iranian general ended up in california and is working at a gas station as a cashier. daam why i cant think of the name of that movie??
but so far im very impressed with this movie the kite runner. its very good, its a very good story, and very good drama. and alot of it reminds me of the old world, the muslim-dominated old city of hyderabad. even the houses and and the streets look the same. plus it took me a while to figure out that hasan was actually the son of the house servant who served the family for forty years. i went back and looked at it again lol.
whenever i was dragged off to india as a child in the 80's, specifcially 1983 and 1984, i was like that too. I and along with my other cousins used to play with the servants children as well. and these servants were in my family home for generations. and it was like as if they were part of the family. of course no one lives in my family home anymore. and all the servants have fled. and believe it or not, one of the servants had murdered his wife in the dining room after blungenging her to death with a metal pipe off of his bycicle rickshaw back in 1991. she had ran into the dining room and hid under the table.
now today im told, the house my grandfather built, is now in a delapadated state and nobody lives there anymore.
but alot of the values that the dad was trying to teach his son, like stand up for yourself and stick up for yourself is very right. now there's a pathan dad for you there. a desi father would tell the son to run away from fights (mine did, daam coward). and when he took on that russian soldier who wanted to rape that poor afghani woman, i thought daam what a bad azz. i couldnt watch the scene where the pathan boy goes and rapes poor hasan. maan i knew pathan's were known for sexually molesting boys but come on they didnt have to show the whole scene. thats where i fast fowarded it. but one thing was very interesting was the class divisions showed. it reminded me of desis alot, but of course afghanis and desis have alot in common.
is at amir's b'day. when that same boy who was harrassing them, was there with his father, only because of his status and is pretending to act like a freind. while hassan, who was a real freind to amir had to walk around serving drinks to everyone.

Re: Movies Watched Recently
you know this story of the kite runner reminded of the true story between the childhood freindship of the othman sultan sulaiman the magnificent and Ibrahim Pasha. sadly it ended in tragedy..
Quote:
Ibrahim Pasha
Pargalı İbrahim Pasha was the boyhood friend of Suleiman. Ibrahim was originally Greek Orthodox and when young was educated at the Palace School under the devshirme system. Suleiman made him the royal falconer, then promoted him to first officer of the Royal Bedchamber.[48] Eventually, Ibrahim Pasha became the Grand Vizier in 1523 and commander-in-chief of all the armies. Suleiman also conferred upon Ibrahim Pasha the honor of beylerbey of Rumelia, granting Ibrahim authority over all Turkish territories in Europe, as well as command of troops residing within them at times of war. According to a 17th century chronicler, Ibrahim had asked Suleiman not to promote him to such high positions, fearing for his safety; to which Suleiman replied that under his reign no matter what the circumstance, Ibrahim would never be put to death.
Yet Ibrahim eventually fell from grace with the Sultan. During his thirteen years as Grand Vizier, his rapid rise to power and vast accumulation of wealth had made Ibrahim many enemies among the Sultan's court. Reports had reached the Sultan of Ibrahim's imprudence committed during a campaign against the Persian Safavid empire: in particular his adoption of the title serasker sultan was seen as a grave affront to Suleiman.[50] Suleiman's suspicion of Ibrahim was worsened in a quarrel between the latter and the Minister of Finance Iskender Chelebi. The dispute ended in the disgrace of Chelebi on charges of intrigue, with Ibrahim convincing Suleiman to sentence the Minister to death. Before his death however, Chelebi's last words were to accuse Ibrahim of conspiracy against the Sultan.[50] These dying words convinced Suleiman of Ibrahim's disloyalty,
and on March 15, 1536 Ibrahim's lifeless body was discovered in the Topkapi palace.

Re: Movies Watched Recently
Absolute power corrupts, absolutely. The history of Islam after our Prophet (PBUH) is a painful testament to this statement.
