Taare Zameen Par- aside from Water, this is the only indian movie I've liked in the past 10 years. I thought it would be a kids movie, but it was really impressive and had a great story. It's about a kid who has trouble in school and his parents/school can't figure out why until Amir Khan shows up. No love story, it's about learning disabilities, special needs kids, the importance of art, understanding that every kid can't be a doctor but can have his own talents. Good acting in general, though Amir seemed overly emo/weepy looking at times. Those cartoon scenes where the kid is daydreaming was like watching a 1980s version of Finding Nemo, I fastforwarded.
The songs were crappy as usual except for this one, which was shot really well, it was cool how they're all getting up for their morning routine in fastforward, and then it slows down when you get to the kid since his mind works another way, very clever. YouTube - Jame Raho - Taare Zameen Par ( Video Song) Also it was interesting how western inventors/artists were mentioned, like Picasso, Einstein, Thomas Edison, Da Vinci, Oscar Wilde, etc, and kinda sad that no Eastern ones were mentioned. Also in terms of dress, most of the women wore saris, such as the kid's mother, but the young special ed female teacher wore western clothes, while all the men wore only western suits/jeans. (unless Amir's nehru collar shirt counts at the end). here's the movie's website, I recommend it: TAARE ZAMEEN PAR :: Official website Last edited by MoonStar; 02-18-2008 at 11:35 PM. |

Dead Ringers - Classic Cronenburg movie about Identical twins who slowly lose control of their lives.
Deer Hunter - Wow. They sure don't make movies like they used to. Classic.

The Jane Austun Book Club-- too cute.
The Illusionist- it was oki, the ending was predictable, I liked The Prestige a whole lot better. I can't wait for the The Other Boleyn Girl to come out. ![]() ![]() shadha-

![]() anyway, some more points, the mother who looks like a traditional housewife mentions that she gave up her career when the kids were born. With the educated/suit wearing dad, modern decor apartment, and career/housewife they seem to represent what the modern/upper middle class family is supposed to be like, with careerwomen being more common but still expected to have a traditional role. (It'll be surprising if movies show both parents working full time and both pitching in the housework). also religion- the family was hindu but there isn't really any overt mention of it. No gods in the background of the house, not that I recall anyway. Maybe because Aamir Khan was the director/producer, or because they wanted the 'modern' indian family to be less traditional in that matter? Or just have the movie focus on the issue of dyslexia rather than what religion the characters are. The principal of the school was muslim though (he says 'subhanallah' once). And the young female teacher's name was Jabeen, so it seemed to show a mix of characters' religions. |
