That's hilarious! And I hate to ask, but I always see the word fob used and don't know what it stands for. Something to do with being an immigrant perhaps?

Vertigo- 1958 Hitchcock thriller, it was really good. unexpected twists. Novak and Stewart acted very well. Interesting locations too. I want to go to that huge museum.

I didn't like her any less for that, just noticed it a lot. The film was very good and portrayed everything in the book successfully. It starts off when she already has 2 kids though, so you miss a great big chunk out of it.
I suppose it's a matter of taste then I didn't like the plot at all, I wasn't convinced by any of the characters, didnt like/sympathise with any of them, I didn't feel that they spoke or behaved in ways that befitted the natures she had created for them, if you understand what I mean. I was irritated by things like the letters Nazneen received from her sister. I understand the sister's schooling was meant to be limited, and so of course spelling and the finer points of grammar wouldn't have been accurate. But I feel Monica Ali took it TOO FAR, there were BASIC grammatical mistakes which a person who can SPEAK shouldn't be making, even if they are completely illiterate - which Nazneen's sister was not.

As for Monica Ali's writing style - it was certainly simple but I didn't feel it was as...well-crafted as that of, say, Jhumpa Lahiri. I love JL's simplicity, because it has style.

Agreed.
Did not understand that at all.

I agree her writing style was simple, as for the plot, she created a fictional character that had some basis of reality in the context she set it in, or at least that was her intention. It's not the best book i've read but i like it because:

a) It gives depth to people who come over from third world countries. Usually they're not appreciated and they're often believed to be simple-minded simply because they cannot conquer the language barrier.

b) The childrens inability to communicate well with their parents and vice versa. This is true in a lot of cases and towards the end showed that they both loved each other even though they realised they were different because they were British and not Bangladeshi born

c) Nazneen's husbands attitude, what i do appreciate of her writing was that she was able to describe him as a disgusting, chauvinistic character. At the end, this turned around as the reader was allowed more insight into his character and found that he was a guy who was big headed but he loved his family enough to not force them to travel to Bangladesh with him and i admired that

but yes, you're right, it's a matter of taste

Once Upon a Time in America- Overall, a good movie. It dragged a little, I'd suggest watching it in two sittings. Strange portrayal of rape. Amazingly good original score by ennio morricone

LOTR could really be extremely boring. After the first viewing, the three movies are just so slow...

Conan The Barbarian is a much better fantasy movie than Lord Of The Rings, and more deserving of awards, but thats just my opinion

Just watched Pirates of the Caribbean 3 - I don't know what to say. I feel like I've been waiting a year and a half to see how they were going to ingeniously end it, and I still feel like I'm waiting.

But, I also saw Amazing Grace - the story of William Wilberforce, MP who spearheaded the abolition of slavery throughout the British Empire (among other humanitarian efforts)... awesome story.
