Artist and gay activist Charles Merrill, in a follow-up to his recent editing of a Bible with a black marker, has topped himself by burning a rare copy of the Koran valued at $60,000. Why does he do it? To combat hate, says Merrill.
"The purpose of editing and burning Abrahamic Holy Books is to eliminate homophobic hate," Merrill stated. "Both ancient books are terrorist manuals."
Merrill said he inherited the Koran from his late wife Evangeline Johnson Merrill, a Johnson & Johnson heiress who was given the book by the King of Jordan in the 1950's while on a United Nations mission. "Airplanes are flown into buildings because of words, and hate crimes against gays," Merrill said.
