The Messenger of Allaah (salla Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Let the people stop boasting about their forefathers that have passed away - who are merely fuel for the Hellfire - or they will surely become more insignificant to Allaah than the beetle that rubs faeces on its nose. Allaah has removed from you the party spirit of the Days of Ignorance and the bragging about one's forefathers. Indeed, a person is either a pious believer or a wretched sinner. All of mankind are the children of Adam, and Adam was created from dirt." [Reported by Abu Dawood (no.5116) and At-Tirmidhee (no.4233) from Abu Hurayrah and authenticated by Ibn Taymiyah in Al-lqtida (p.35)]

In an another hadeeth, The Messenger of Allaah (salla Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:

" ...People should give up their pride in nations because this is a coal from the coals of hell-fire. If they do not give this up Allah (swt) will consider them lower than a lowly worm which pushes itself through khur (feces)." [abu Dawud and Tirmidhi].

uh oh...I have Irish pride!

I have a feeling this isn't necessarily about having pride for ones heritage, but developing a racist or nationalistic pride. For example, thinking ones heritage was superior to any other country would be crossing over into "sinful territory."

I saw a guy in a "kilt" today for St. Paddy's Day....it was a plaid women's skirt that he wore as a kilt. It was pleated all the way around AND hit him at mid-calf. A real kilt is only pleated in the back and sides and hits at mid-knee. I wanted to point and laugh...but I didn't.

So...my heritage might not be superior to anyone's, but my knowledge of kilts was far superior to his :p

It was pretty funny. It was just like "oh honey....oh no...no no no no no no. just dont"

Too many kilt faux pas in one store. Couldn't handle it.

and another guy, who was with him, was wearing a utilikilt (not a traditional kilt, but is usually made out of stronger fabric and has big huge pockets. Usually for outdoor work/sports) and had his shirt untucked all over it. *shakes head in shame* C'mon American boys.... learn how to wear your traditional garb or dont wear it at all!

Aren't kilts supposed to be worn shirtless or something?

I mean like... not shirt, no underwear... just a kilt, a tartan cloth, and your beard to protect you from the elements?

Scottish dudes are hairy. They've got an extra pair of pants just in their leg hair. My dad is the hariest man I know! :p

True story: when I was little, I called his leg hair his "fur"...that should be a clue how hairy Scottish/Irish dudes are!

Ibn Taymiyyah (d.728H) rahimahullaah said: "Everything which is outside the call of Islaam and the Qur'aan, with regards to lineage, land, nationality, schools of thoughts and ways, then it is from the calls of jaahiliyyah [ignorance]. lndeed, even when the Muhaa jirs (those Companions who migrated from Makkah to Madeenah) and the Ansaars (those Companions who aided and supported those who migrated) argued, such that one of the Muhaajirs said:" O Muhaajirs! (implying; rally to my aid) " And one of the Ansaar said: "O Ansaar!" Upon hearing this, the Prophet said: "Is it with the calls of Jaahiliyyah that you call, and l am still amongst you!" And he became very angry at that." [Al-Bukhari 8/137]

Hadith - Muslim, Narrated Abu Malik al-Ash'ariy

"Four things are among my followers from the traditions of Jahiliyyah (Ignorance) which will not leave: pride of lineage, slandering kinship, use of astrology for rain, and wailing"

that's a utilikilt. It's not a traditional kilt and is often worn in sports and to recreational events where traditional garb might be deemed "fancy."

the standard opinion is that the proper length for a kilt is at mid-knee. It's not seen as a MUST, but most kilt-wearers will recommend it. It's sort of the stamp of a noob or poor measurements when the kilt is hanging below the knee. Most men who are constant kilt wearers will have their kilt at mid-knee:

It even looks 1000 times better that way. Nobody will tell you that you are wearing it WRONG if it hangs lower (some might but the kilt community dislikes kilt police), but again, there's the general opinion that it doesnt look as sharp and is a "noob" thing to do. Men who frequently wear kilts are incredibly picky about the accessories that go with it too and the way they fit. Everything from the color of the hose, the length of the jacket, the type of belt, the style of jacket, and the position in which the sporran hangs are all impecably thought about and honored. That's why, being around men who are obsessed with how their kilt looks, I couldnt help but laugh at the guys who came in wearing womens tartan skirts hanging to mid-calf and trying to pass them off as kilts.

The rules don't apply to women, though. This is the length of mine:

maybe even a teensy bit shorter. I wear it with boots and tights.
