Voilaaaaaa Ladies and Gentleman,

Instead of enjoying the sunshine, I spent my early morning hours at the Home Hardware Store, at Rona for couple of reasons. a) there was a 10% sale before 12 pm and ;) I'm renovating EVERYTHING this summer. :faint: inshaAllah. I'll share my small projects slowly.

There was a young teen, who helped me a great deal especially with paint selection. Did you know that, there's eco friendly paints too? they are already mixed colours, but they are recycled and they are super cheap. Unfortunately, they didn't have the colour I wanted, but I'd definitely recommend it. Holla, things aren't cheap that's what I learned today.~$28-58/gallon. I don't plan to remove anything, I grabbed two plastic covers that are "specifically design to protect my stuff" from paint. So, I'll go ahead and trust what the label says and paint while my stuff (including carpet) is there?

B) Has anyone Stained Wood before? I have two things in mind. a) I have a coffee table that needs to be stained from a pine/maple colour to walnut brown. iA B) then, I have my bed frame. I bought the stainer, it's called, 2617. I'm gonna be using sponages from the dollar store to stain it. I don't wanna use the paint brushes, I'm too afraid of strike marks. Since, my bedroom is in the basement and I'm not fit enough to carry it outside, I'm not sure..how to create a good ventilation system to avoid the nasty smell after the fact? Fans?

thanks, share your experiences/advices etc.

make sure you sand the coffee table really really well before you start staining. The point of the brushes is to get as even a coating as possible with the least messy application. If you think you can do that with a sponge, great.

open every window you can in the basement and set up a circulation zone with one fan blowing air in, and at least one more fan blowing air out.

Updates:

THE ROOM: the old paint colour was the shade of "pebble" thats the naem of the colour paint. It turned out that my new basement bedroom has a lot of moisture, poor may be due to the poor ventilation system. So, the paint didn't adhere well to the wall. I ended up needing SEVERAL coats of yellow paint. and it still looks that it can take couple more? watever, I'm not spending a dime more! hehehe. I'm moderately happy with my yellow walls. :nerd: I think, I can survive with a tint of grey. no biggie.
PS: I painted with rollers. it makes the job super easy and an angle brush is heaven.

Now my next goal: My ex bedroom which is PINK. and I need to paint it PEARL WHITE. holla. i wonder, how many coats of paint I'd need this time around. :S

and the bathroom needs to be PEARL white as well. (bathroom is already white, so no biggie).

I need to HAMMER a huge/heavy antique mirror on the wall (in the foyer). that's underneath a D shaped glass table. is that a good idea? can i trust the nail that can hold the mirror, so it won't crash the table for me?

the table looks like this in shape, except it's glass and trendy!

what kind of nails/supporters would you use to screw the heavy antique mirror?

tahnks in advance,

did you prime before you painted? i got a 15 min lecture from the dude at home depot about priming before painting.. since your ex bedroom is pink.. and the new colour is white.. u will have to prime it first. i think you should have primed your basement before you painted it yellow too..

make sure there is a stud thingy behind the wall where you are hanging the mirror.. or you get can these special screws.. should do the trick..

no. i didn't prime. i know, i shud have! apparently, primer helps, the paint adhere more to the wall. but it is not colourless? so, i didn't want to dull the colour.

i've the studd thing, for some reason, i'm still apprehensive about the heavy mirror on top of the glass table. :nerd:

salams,
i'm tempted to take pics of my new bedroom walls and post it here. inshaAllah i'm thinking of it. also, RONA disappoints me, I Can't find ANY WHITE CARPET ANYWHERE. :what:

ps: I love my parents..my love grows deeper for them..when they allow me to "renovate". currently, my attempt is to sand the front door and paint it WHITE. inshaAllah. ...next is the railing..and then the *lightning*...the foyer..and living room...:what: oh dear God..i spent FULL 3.5 hours at RONA today. I must be the ONLY GIRL on the face of the third who doesn't mind spending my pay cheques on renovating the house and making it look fabulousER insha'Allah.;).

wasalams.

yayyyyyyyyy, good on you, Sugarberry.

As i was walking down the flooring aisle today, i thought, i'd definitely would want a handy man especially i'm getting very handy myself. i also helped my younger brother nail some woods together. (who is building a "model for a deck for fun"). it's sooo much fun. ;)

when you're changing an entire wall from one distinct color to another, i think you should definitely use primer. primer is its own color, and it depends as to what color primer you should get for your new color to go on well. ask the guys/girls at this mysterious 'rona' you keep talking about which primer will go best for your next color.

and it's good, because you'll need fewer coats of the colored paint in order to get it to the shade it should be.
ok look. it's not my fault that i'm awesome. thank you. and you're welcome.

as salaamu alaikum,

the only thing you need primer for is to prepare an unfinished surface for painting. like new, unpainted drywall for example. it helps smooth out any minute texture variations and prevents the material from absorbing too much of the paint (which can affect the finish).

what hijabihoodlum said about using a different color is true, but you shouldnt have to worry about it unless you're doing a much lighter color on top of a darker color. otherwise as long as theres already a painted surface on the wall, you can easily just paint it over directly with any other color paint.
