The MazdaSpeed 3 is not a girl's car.

But it's a hatchback/wagon, which everyone says is a girl car.

Seriously, people need to make up their minds.

I'm not saying a hatchback is necessarily a girl's car. The PT Cruiser is a 40 year old soccer mom vehicle, though. So is a Saturn station wagon.

Cars like the VW GTI and MazdaSpeed 3 are not girl cars. Heck, the E91 Bimmer and Audi RS6 Avant are full-fledged wagons, and they're both great cars.

Only 40 year old? My mom thinks they are "cute" and almost bought one (I'm glad she changed her mind) which makes me think they are more of a post-menopausal/change of life vehicle. Doesn't help that the only people I've seen driving them are retired.

Well, 40 years old at a minimum. I guess it might be closer to 50?

All I know is it's absolutely positively the wrong vehicle for a 19 year old male, even if it didn't cause him to get laughed at (which it will).

Yeah... comparing a PT Cruiser to a Saturn Wagon, I think the Saturn is a little better in terms of college student reputation. Unless you're at a IV League school, most college students have less than stylish vehicles. The Saturn is pretty neutral. If that's what he ends up with, he could still have it much worse. My friend from grad school had to drive his mom's bright purple Chrylser Concorde as an undergrad in Alaska. I've also known PLENTY of kids with beat to hell Toyota Tercel's, Geo Metro's (don't know how they were still running) Ford Taurus's and other unfashionable vehicles.

Yeah, but he's not being forced into a crappy hand-me-down. If he's got ~5k to spend, he can do much better than that. Fashion aside, a car like a Saturn wagon is just an awful drive.

Yeah, he's not going to do any street racing in a Saturn, that's for sure. His insurance will be pretty cheap though!

Why is basebal an olympic sport?

I don't want to be street racing. I just want a car that will get me from point A to point B. After college when I have a successful job, I plan to buy a nicer car.

Then you just get the cheapest, most reliable, lowest miles, good gas mileage, lowest insurance rate car you can afford, and to hell with what anyone thinks

I'm not talking about street racing, I'm just talking about being young and having a car you actually enjoy driving (purchased for the same price you're looking at spending on other cars). Not every 19 year old has that option, so if you do, imo you should take advantage of it. Just saying.. but again, if you like the Saturn or the PT Cruiser & you want either of those cars, go for it. More power to you, bro.

:) WHY didn't you look under the hood? All y'all out there, it's important to take care of your car. Don't ever count on the "Oh well, it's such and such car nothing will go wrong" You gotta take care of it no matter what. You need to check the fluids and such regularly. Even if you only paid like $2000 for your car, that's still $2000. You don't want to spend another $2000 for another car because you didn't take care of it.

I won't debate with anyone about the reliability of some of the Japanese cars. Especially with the Neon issue I mentioned earlier and Chrysler, I don't understand why American auto makers have not improved the reliability of their fleet. There are SOME American cars that are really excellent, but there are plenty of others that have some serious design flaws. The worst part is that for a lot of those flaws, the manufacturer KNEW about the flaw, released the model anyway, and didn't even bother to fix it in subsequent model years. I dunno, but to me that's just pure laziness. No wonder the American car companies are having a hard time these days. They really have no one but themselves to blame for it either.

Your FIL Taurus problem, well known design flaw that they didn't fix for several model years. Inexcusable.

I didn't know anything about cars at the time. After the radiator cracked i educated myself a bit after that.

$5,000 for a worn out saloon honda civic...so much for the American car market being cheap as chips.

True, but the 335xi is thousands and thousands of $$$ more than an A4 2.0t quattro.

Once you start adding on options, they get pretty close.. which is really odd, considering that's not even the 3.2 engine.

Initially, Audi wanted the A4 to compete with the 3 series. The S4 & S5 were made to compete with the M3. That resulted in an epic fail for Audi, so now the A4 is positioned against the 328, the S4/S5 is supposed to go against the 335, and the RS cars against the //M cars. That's how things go at an Audi sponsored track day, at least. They won't put a 335 anywhere near the A4.

The S4 & S5 are nice cars (the S5 is absolutely gorgeous), but they run ~10-20k more than a fully loaded 335xi & still don't compare to the Bimmer performance/handling wise. Especially once you throw a tune into the 335 (which is easy).

On top of that, Audi no longer offers manual transmissions in the US versions of the A4 (the 6 speed is still standard on the S4). Fail.

Did I mention Quattro understeers? Rear-biased xDrive FTW. :(

Personally, for A4 2.0t money, I'd get a 328xi. IMO if you really want value & performance in a sports sedan, Infiniti's the best bet. If performance matters to you at all, Audis are a ripoff. But hey, I'm a Bimmer fanatic, so I must hate all things Audi (except the R8).

I will say that Audi's interior is probably objectively superior to BMW's, though I prefer the Teutonic austerity of the Bimmer subjectively.
