Salaams,

I am so sick of living in NY, my love for it has reached its limit, Im tired of seeing nothing but cars, concrete, bricks, stuffed subways, dirty streets, and people with attitudes :faint:

I am doing research on where the best places in America to raise a family are. Anyone who wants to give advice or warnings is more than welcomed :look::flower::p

So here's what I got so far...

City Crime Rankings by Population Group

Im kinda interested in Arizona...this place looks cool

I hear San Diego is nice... I like the area around Seattle too.
What kind of peace do I mean and what kind of a peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war.... not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women -- not merely peace in our time, but peace in all time.

Too expensive and traffic is becoming a major issue.

i'm really surprised about san diego traffic... i'll watch the news before i head out and the traffic report will say there's traffic backed up for miles on the 163, or that the 8 and the 5 are a mess... and when i get out there, NOTHING... san diego traffic is nothing compared to the 91 or the 405 in LA/OC/IE... i guess i should be thankful but its annoying watching breaking news that a car is being towed off the freeway... :flower:

San Diego sucks. Nice scenery, but a boring place. It's a lot cheaper than the Bay Area or LA, but if you want to buy a home, be prepared to shell out $$$.

I'd suggest the Midwest (Chicago 'burbs, Minneapolis area, Wisconsin), Phoenix, Atlanta 'burbs, or Dallas/Ft Worth burbs. Depends on what you like in terms of weather and culture. All of those places are spread out while still having culture & nice/decent metropolitan areas, traffic isn't TOO horrible (Phoenix is probably the worst on that list), and they all have a reasonable cost of living.

I think it also depends on the Muslim community. I know for myself and Mr. PhDGirl, we don't want to be in a smaller town where we're the only or one of a very few Muslims. One community in which we lived was really stifling, so we didn't wind up going to things as much as we probably should have, which was kind of difficult. There are things like Sunday School, some choice in masjids etc to consider. Good luck in wherever you decide to go!

Awww, that's cute and true to some extent. But, you do have to live (and probably eventually raise kids) in the community, so it's important to think about the environment.

Based on places I've lived, I'd have to say:

Rancho Santa Fe and Atherton California.

Don't ever move to Greenwich, CT :flower:, it sucks!!!!

NY isn't that bad, I have family in Old Westbury, Manhasset and Cold Spring Harbor, which are nice areas

chicago :flower:

granted traffic to and from the city is horrendous.
but the muslim population here is fantastic, both in the subarbs and in downtown.
The word As-shams (the sun) is feminine, and Qamar (moon) is masculine. The sun burns itself to give light and life to everything around, and the moon is Muneer, meaning it reflects the light; it radiates the brilliance of the sun.
So when we shine as men, the implication is that we are reflecting the glorious light of our women.

The countryside. Preferably on a hill. Keeps you dry during any flooding, and you'll get a good angle if any fuzzies invade.

I've not visited yet, but I hear NYC is very similar to London. People often get London burn-out, similiar to the feelings you're describing about feeling fed-up with living in NY. I understand where you're coming from - bad attitudes, high pollution, non-stop waves of people everywhere can take its toll on you. But that's part of city life.

Think of what you'll be giving up - hustle bustle (moving to a greener area can feel very isolated when you're used to the city), excitement (greener places are pretty to look at, but they tend to be quite boring after the novelty of the scenery has worn off), everything open 24-7 (living outside the city is not as convenient, things are often closed after a certain time).

I love city-life, but when I catch myself feeling the grey concrete slabs, and sour-faced unhelpful people more than the benefits of city-life, I try and get out of the city for a weekend or something, to somewhere pretty and peaceful to recharge my batteries. But after a day or two in the beautiful countryside... I start missing the city. Maybe, regular breaks out of New York to somewhere completely different, with green spaces and friendly people will be better for you, than completely uprooting and moving out to the styx.
