It reduces inflammatory enzymes circulating through the body in a manner similar to aspirin; though it lacks the actual anti-inflammatory actions of aspirin, it is at least equally effective as an antipyretic.

And it's the inflammatory enzymes what cause the excess heat during a fever?
What kind of peace do I mean and what kind of a peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war.... not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women -- not merely peace in our time, but peace in all time.

The enzymes set off chemical pathways which alter the body's regulation of heat and thereby cause fever. Fever is ultimately mediated via a part of the brain called the hypothalamus using a chemical called prostaglandin E2. Tylenol can block the production of some of the inflammatory enzymes which promote the production of prostaglandin E2, thereby reducing fever.

That all said, I'm not a fan of pyrolytic therapy. Reducing fevers, except in certain very specific situations (such as head trauma) doesn't improve overall outcome. It is worthwhile to treat a fever if the individual is uncomfortable, but otherwise you're just masking one of the body's signs that there is an underlying disease process occurring. You're better off figuring out what is causing the fever and treating that.
I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch,
He said to me, "You must not ask for so much."
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door,
She cried to me, "Hey, why not ask for more?"
Oh, like a bird on the wire, like a drunk in a midnight choir,
I have tried in my way to be free.

Basically, the inflammatory molecules (cytokines) travel around the body; when they reach the brain, they set off a thermoregulatory area in the hypothalamus. The set point goes up, the brain releases prostaglandins, which then circulate around the body and cause the metabolism to speed up. The temperature rises and the feedback loop then allows the temp to drop. Thats why you get fever spikes, followed by cooling down, spike, cool down, etc.

In other news, I saw my first open heart surgery today. Oh. My. God. :look: Quadruple bypass. Awesome. :D

There was a man on GMTV today hose had hiccups for 11 months :look:

Asalaamalaykum,

Hiccups are caused by an irritation of a nerve called the phrenic nerve that originated in your neck area and innervates your diaphragm (a muscle that helps us inhale and exhale). Irritation causes the nerve to spontaneously contract this muscle and you hiccup

Now the problem is no one knows y that nerve gets irritated in the first place.

Well cardio is pretty cool, but a field that's in trouble.

I can understand why people love it though - there's nothing quite like watching a heart slow down, wobble, then just stop. And at the same time, watching the EKG go from normal to flatlining. You want to freak out, but everyone is calm, because it's so routine. :D

Edit: And yes, I guess I'm a closet gunner. Or I love surgery too much. I stopped by the ICU to say hi to some of the residents I worked with (well, actually to get advice on residency). They were going to do a procedure, so of course the first words out of my mouth were "Can I help?" :look: I'm not even on a surgical rotation right now!

I have really dark circles under my eyes which are partially covered up by my glasses, but they can still be seen from the side. I've had them for some time. I know lack of sleep isn't the cause of it, but I think my low iron level has something to do with it? And does putting potato slices over them make it go away? I read that somewhere..haven't tried it yet.

Too little iron in the diet can lead to iron-deficiency anemia. If u still have a low iron level then u shud eat food that contains iron. Usu the people who have iron-deficiency anemia feel profound fatigue, shortness of breath, and rapid impulse, and have pale skin. My mom has it and she does have pale skin and dark circles, i don't kno about the rest. The doc told her that she can pass out anytime if this continues.

if it's only the right side, you should figure out what the difference is between your right and left.

do you rest your face on your hand? do you sleep on the right side? do you not change your pillowcase enough? do you usually keep your phone on the right side of your face? do you wear your hair to the right side (change your hair products)?

Nope. :o

I'd never seen one before, so the heart-lung bypass machine was amazing, then cracking the chest, the lap harvest, the heart-stopping, the anastamosis, restarting the heart - it was all amazing. Plus I got to watch over the anesthesia drape, so I had the best view.

I was in the OR six hours, but it didn't seem that long. It's always been that way. An hour in medicine rounds, however, feels like a week. It's almost physically painful. :p

Well, you have had a major climate change, first of all. It may just be that the adjustment is making your skin more sensitive to heat, different products, etc. Does it seem more like pimples with stuff in them, or small irritated patches of skin? Basically, if you've seen both, is it more like acne or eczema?
