I thought it would be cool for us to post our favorite recipes we make for iftari/sehri since everyone has their own traditions ...besides, im running out of ideas on what to make every day and this thread would be cool for inspiration ...

i'll be posting my own as soon as i get the chance.:faint:

Bread and water should be good enough for Iftar since most of us are hungry enough to eat anything

so far dates, fruit chat, and some sort of fried things-samosas, pakoras (potato, cauliflower, paneer, onion, or eggplant) with homemade green chutney, are daily items at iftar time. I need to get Rooh Afza, we add crushed nuts/pistachios to that.

also we made puff pastry things in the oven filled with shredded chicken, mushrooms, green chilis, cheese, salt and pepper. :tasty:

and I want to try out this recipe, I've had moong dal pakoras but want to try urud dal out:

I try not to make a lot Iftar item cuz after eating that, there's no room for dinner. I've made fruit salad, pakora and chicken stuffed in crescent rolls. The rolls were so yummy!
I marinaded chicken in tikka masala, grilled it, shredded it and baked in crescent rolls. L

You have iftar and then you have dinner afterwards? Arent Iftar and dinner sort of merged?

Not everyone eats Iftar and dinner together. Most of the time we just eat dinner, no Iftar. But we always break our fast with a date.

Iftar is usually the appetizer stuff ie pakoras, samosas, chaats, etc. Dinner would be the main course(s). A lot of people will break their fast with the iftar and go pray and chill for a while. Dinner is served a little later. That's how we've always done it anyway.

really easy cold chole/chickpea salad recipe:

1 can chickpeas, drain and washed
1 tomato, chopped
1 medium onion, diced
bunch of parsley, chopped
1 or more green chilis, chopped finely
lemon juice
salt
1 teas or more of chaat masala

mix all. enjoy :tasty: it's really nice at iftar time. Make it in advance and let chill in the refrigerator so the flavors combine.

my family always has cholay at our iftar table :tasty: my in-laws don't eat them that much though.
but my parents prefer to cook them chole for a few minutes to soften them before making it the way you suggested. :)

I'd never had them before this way (husband's recipe) and now I'm addicted. We made the same recipe but used kalay chana instead, just as yummy. :tasty:

dude, there's only one real recipe in here? come on guys!

i've found that eating all that fried food for iftaar really makes me nauseous (last night was hell, i felt so awful). starving all day and eating after that long period makes me nauseous anyway, usually can't eat much for suhur either. so basically i'm going to stick to really light, simple stuff for suhur and iftaar iA and save the heavy stuff like rice for dinner (maybe).

vegetable sandwich
100-calorie wheat sandwich thin, toasted with some butter and shredded, dried basil
chopped veggies: tomato, bell pepper, cucumber, onion, avocado
> arrange the vegetables on one side of the sandwich thin, put the other side on top of it all and voila! sandwich :D

light pasta
boil some spaghetti noodles and 1/2 - 1 cup (or more, depending on how much pasta is used) of mixed frozen vegetables; add 1 chicken cube, some oil and a few cut up garlic cloves to the pan also
once the noodles are soft, drain into a colander and pick out the garlic pieces
put noodles and veggies back into the pan or into a dish and sprinkle with oregano and basil, olive oil (as sauce) and shredded parmesan. mix well!

chicken salad
leftover chicken works really well. chop up the chicken and add finely chopped onions, celery, apples, cucumbers, grapes, salt, pepper and a pinch of sugar. then add a bit of mayo and mix it up really well. you can also chop some avocados, tomatoes and lettuce to put on the chicken salad sandwich :D

instead of a sandwich, you can stuff some pillsbury crescent rolls with this stuff and wrap it up into little chicken pockets. takes about 5 minutes to prepare (if you make the chicken salad beforehand) and only 10 - 12 minutes to bake! i guess someone else had the idea too.. :D

explanation on how to 'seal' the rolls so the chicken doesn't spill out all over the baking sheet http://auntypolknows...ngry-hippo.html
In a sky full of people only some want to fly; is that not crazy?

jelly, i've never had apples/grapes in my chicken salad...sounds interesting though :)

also, with your light pasta recipe, when you say "add 1 chicken cube, some oil and a few cut up garlic cloves to the pan also...once the noodles are soft, drain into a colander and pick out the garlic pieces" do you mean that you throw away the chicken broth at the end, once you drain the pasta? and i assume that you mean a bouillon cube, when you say "chicken cube"...or is it a piece of chicken? lol. lastly, do the veggies get mushy when you boil them, or do you add em towards the end?

Chicken pockets reminded me of calzone, so now I'm making that for dinner. For Iftar I wanna make eggplant fritters and some fresh fruit smoothie. We eat Iftar/dinner together.

hmmmm Ive lost 5 lbs. This is the first time Ive lost weight since I was probably 11 years old. Ive been 125 lbs my entire life. Going through a breakup during Ramadan works wonders for someones diet. lol.

But anyway, I have leftover iHop and pizza to eat tonight...and my dad is putting some of my halaal hot dogs on the grill too.
