Re: Facebook Thread
there's a bumper sticker that has two cats standing next to a sink in the bathroom and it says,
"Going to the Chamber of Secrets. BRB."

Facebook A Black Hole For Personal Info
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/11/te...pagewanted=all

"The NY Times has an article on how Facebook is so sticky it is nearly impossible to get loose. While the Web site offers users the option to deactivate their accounts, Facebook servers keep copies of the information in those accounts indefinitely. Many users who have contacted Facebook to request that their accounts be deleted have not succeeded in erasing their records from the network. 'It's like the Hotel California,' said Nipon Das, a user who tried unsuccessfully to delete his account. 'You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.' It took Mr. Das two months and several e-mail exchanges with Facebook's customer service representatives to erase most of his information from the site, which finally occurred after he sent an e-mail threatening legal action. But even after that, a reporter was able to find Mr. Das's empty profile on Facebook and successfully sent him an e-mail message through the network. Facebook's quiet archiving of information from deactivated accounts has increased concerns about the network's potential abuse of private data, especially in the wake of its fumbled Beacon advertising feature."

Facebook Sharing Too Much Personal Data With Application Developers
"Remember the Facebook News Feed privacy uproar? What about the Beacon scandal from late last year? Privacy activists are rallying around yet another major issue at Facebook, in which the company is secretly sharing user data with third parties. Researchers from the University of Virginia recently announced that in a study of the top 150 Facebook applications, more than 90% were given access to information that was not needed to function correctly. That Scrabble or Superpoke application you really like? Its developers get access to your religion, sexuality and home town. Facebook's position was summed up by Georgetown Law Professor Dan Solove, 'They seem to be going on the assumption that if someone uses Facebook, they really have no privacy concerns.' Do Facebook users deserve privacy? "
Facebook Platform Privacy
Concurring Opinions
In other words, if someone wanted to have access to your private pictures, or your private info, or wall posts.. all they'd need to do is create an application viral enough for you and your friends to add, or as simple enough as 'which islamican are you going to marry?'
Everyone with a 'private' profile, should realize there is nothing private about your profile, except by means of user interface, given how much access you already allow to your applications, and 'friends'.
All it takes is one friend's profile or pc that is compromised, or the friend installing an application that reads the friends access level into your account.
Unfortunately .. it never seems like I'm preaching to the choir around here.
If it's on the internet..it's public information. And don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.
and that includes this post
