Default Fasting During Pregnancy

Asalam Alaikum

I dont want this thread to go into any kind of debate and people lashing out on pregnant women that are fasting. Also to not start abusing them of depriving the baby of etc.

Anyway, sisters who are pregnant here, are you fasting? I am just over 4 months pregnanct and so far alhumdulillah i have kept the three fasts and i haven't had no problems. Of course if i see the first sign of trouble i will eat. I feel it isn't causing me or the baby an harm as I eat a lot during suhoor and after iftar.

Any feedback on this? Because I dont want to be harming my child without knowing how fasting affects the feotus etc.

Wsalam

since im due in 2 weeks, i thought it would be best not to fast.Alot of ppl tell me i should go ahead and at least try to, but my family won't allow it.I also don't think I'm capable of keeping a fast because I am extremly thirsty day and night. Inshallah I do plan on making all of these missed fasts.

i don't think there's any harm in fasting when ur in ur first trimester but afterwards it becomes hard for both the mother and child . u should take it really easy if ur fasting . May Allah make it easy for u ...

Pucca?!? Congratulations!! I remember you mentioned something about wanting little ones a while back - you must be thrilled. Hope everything goes wonderfully, inshallah.

I have known women in the later stages of pregnancy to fast (but not every day) and as far as I know it hasnt done them or the child any harm - BUT having said that the safest thing would be to ask your GP/obstetrician.

Approximately how long is the day in the part of the world where you live?

If its a few hours, for example 7 - 9 hours, thats a big difference than 12-14.

I would advise strong strong caution to you, approximately the border of the first trimester is the most developmentally important time in the pregnancy life cycle.

I would suggest talking to your doctor abt fasting, not a scholar, not an islamican, not anyone else.

my own personal opinion is that you shouldn't fast during pregnancy especially since Allah has made it easy for those who are ill, on a journey etc that they can make their fasts up, like wise when women are on their monthly cycle.

Im no medical expert but I would refrain from fasting during pregnancy. You might feel strong and healthy too, but the baby inside you at any time could require nutrition and because you are fasting, the baby starts to drain any nutrients from your body that are keeping you stable.

Allahu aalim don't struggle when Allah has made it easy for you.

Congratulations on all those who are expecting and a small dua from the Quraan which is adviseable to read if you want a righteous child is "RABBI HABLI MINNAS SALIHEEN"

my opinion is also that you shouldn't fast just to be on the safe side. the longterm effects of fasting during pregnancy is still unknown. there was one study that associated fasting during pregnancy (>13 hrs) to preterm labor. also, the baby may end up taking from your stores, which leads to a less healthier mom.

Asalaamualaikom,

Congrats to all the expectant moms! I too am expecting, alhumdulillah just completing my 5th month. I looked into the fasting/pregnancy thing earlier and was able to get the opinion of some good scholars on it too. Before Ramadan, I felt uncomfortable with what I read on sunnipath.com, for example (the hanafi opinions, to clarify), which explain that a pregnant/nursing mother is required to fast unless if there is any sound medical reason (based on past experience or a "practicing doctor's opinion") to not fast. I felt, similar to someone else who wrote earlier, that sometimes the "harm" is not known until it's too late, which is why I did not feel comfortable with their opinion.

Yet as Ramadan neared, I felt more encouraged and in fact excited to give fasting a try. Alhumdulillah, the first few days were quite easy... the same as non-pregnancy fasting for me. Yet as the days have gone by, particularly on nights I have not rested well, or on days I did not have a "full" sahur (more than a bowl of cereal), I have found it a little harder. On those days, I broke my fast as I began to feel dehydrated and/or excessively weak/lathargic.

In pregnancy, so many things are to be determined on an individual basis, and of course with the consultation of your doctor. My doctor knew nothing about Ramadan either, but I explained it to her, and she reluctantly said I could give it a try. She did tell me to keep some Ensure or other protein drinks handy, in case if I began to feel clammy, weak, or tingling sensations (indications of dehydration/low blood sugar, I guess), and to drink those immediately.

Also, I just had my 20 week check-up and the ultra sound technician was Muslim. I asked her if she has noticed any changes in fetuses of fasting woman. She said she has not, that their activity levels are typically normal. But she did mention that there is the risk of going into preterm labor if you become dehydrated, so that's to be avoided at all costs.

Anyways, I know women who have fasted in both their second and third trimesters of pregnancy, and mashallah their babies were born quite healthy. Two of my friends fasted the entire Ramadan last year, even though they were full-term and ready to deliver at any time! Their babies were born close to 8 lbs, mashallah!

But, like I said, it's an individual thing. Take it a day at a time, see how you're doing, and make dua that the food and drink that you consume will be enough to sustain and nourish both you and the baby.

Best of luck during the rest of your pregnancy and throughout Ramadan! I'll be back to read up on this thread!

Wasalaam,
SK

Default Re: Fasting During Pregnancy

When i was expecting Hiba (1 yr back), i had terrible terrible migranic headaches and dizzyness and nausea all the time. by all the time i mean ALL THE TIME. i tried to fast first day, but had to break it in between.. it was so unbearable. I didnt fast that ramadan at all. after Hiba, when ramadan came, she was 5 months old. i was lactating then, so again it was terrible. i guess sisters who have been through lactation would understand what i am saying. My hunger hormones had gone crazy and i was hungry ALL the time. if i dint eat in time, i used to feel really really weak and shaky. so again, i was fasting on and off.
point is, if your body is not supporting you, its better not to fast. anyways you wont be able to concentrate on prayers/recitation of quran if you are feeling terrible inside you. and its no use praying like that. you can always cover up the missed fasts when you r back on your health(y) track. so dont worry if you miss some due to pregnancy. getting pregnant itself is a very pious step. so be happy and enjoy your expecting days.

If any of you expectant sisters feel like talking, you can pm me, i'll give u my IM id.
Ma'Salaam
