Nawawi: Prophet sandal? As in the Prophet wore things made of sandalwood?
Just for the record, I think it looks kinda weird when people have those little grey/ smudgy crosses on their foreheads for ash Wednesday. I'd actually never seen it before until I moved to NY- b/c where I lived before there are like- no catholics.

I like it when I see anyone practicing their religion.
luckily in nyc, there's a huge mix of everything, so you see stuff like that all the time.

Me too.
I don't think it looks weird at all.

pure silk and items made entirely from silk are haraam for men. but synthetic silk is not haraam, according to sunnipath. thing is, pure silk ties will cost you a lot more than the ones made with synthetic silk and most "silk" ties are silk blended with some other sort of fiber.

synthetic silk is called either "rayon" or "polyester"--theres no such thing as synthetic silk. Most ties are 100% sillk--its pretty hard to find one that isnt. But yeah, unless the tag says "rayon" or "polyester" (or some other non-silk material) you cant wear it. I know someone that insists they can wear silk ties because none of the silk anymore comes from the silk worm(or so they claim, but of course this is untrue). Sometimes people will make the most ridiculous excuses to be able to wear silk ties.

And I agree we should support companies like Jaan j. They have awesome quality, and I think people take for granted how hard it really is for them as a company to find material that is fitting for a tie and not silk. May Allah reward them immensely.

Also, you know how girls like for their husbands tie to match their dress on the walima? Well, I emailed the Jaan J people once asking them if they would do a custom tie for a wedding(you would have to mail a swatch of your wedding dress for them to match it with.) and they said they would be more than happy to do it. The tie would cost more, obviously(around $200) but thats a small price to pay for being halal and looking cute and matchy on your wedding...so any potential brides/grooms can definitely contact them.

It's not that bad..I mean, people need to make money. If you're walmart and you're gonna make money off of volume, then you can afford to sell a tie for 15 bucks. But small companies like them...there's probably a lot of work that goes into those ties. I once went out in search of satin so I could make a tie for my dad and I went to menswear fabric stores in the garment district in NYC and they had every type of mens suiting and shirting--they even had a lot of tie material, but there was NO satin. It was all silk. Then add to that the fact that when they buy their fabric, they're probably not buying it in the type of bulk that Calvin Klein does. At this one store if you buy under 30 yards of silk its $18 a yard. Once you go up over 30 yards the price drops to $8 a yard. There are 40 dollar ties in Macys too..the difference is the ties in Macy's are marked up 200 and 300 percent, so they can afford to put them on sale for cheaper. The ties on Jaan J are not marked up as much because theyre working on a smaller scale so each tie costs more to produce. That's the way Shukr is too. If muslims would just invest in start-up muslim companies then insha Allah the prices would drop too. So..shop at Shukr...and Jaan J--just consider it sadaqah

I'd definitely shop at Shukr if they showed some innovation.
