Mother Mary and Jesus Christ in the Holy Quran [Another Perspective]

She is perceived as a holy woman of spiritual life and miraculous virgin birth; a constituent of a lineage of a righteous elite, and a symbol of purity and graciousness. Mother Mary was mentioned in the Holy Quran in a respectable and honorable way; there is one full īSuratī that is named after her name, i.e. īSurat Maryamī [Maryam is the Arabic name of Mother Mary].
Letīs see how the virgin birth took place according to the Quran [19/ 16-21]
19:16] Mention in the scripture (O Mohamed) Mary; She isolated herself from her family, into an eastern location.
19:17] While a barrier separated her from them, we sent to her our Spirit. He went to her in the form of a human being.
19:18] She said, "I seek refuge in the Most Gracious, that you may be righteous."
19:19] He said, "I am the messenger of your Lord, to grant you a pure son."
19:20] She said, "How can I have a son, when no man has touched me; I have never been unchaste."
19:21] He said, "Thus said your Lord, `It is easy for Me. We will render him a sign for the people, and mercy from us. This is a predestined matter.' "
The Quranic clarification of the virgin birth is that it is the will of God that if He wishes something to be, He would just say īBeī and it is. By logic, the Almighty God, who could create that amazing universe, wouldnīt find it difficult to create the Christ without a father.
God verifies Jesus Christīs miraculous birth in another īSurat,ī [3/59]
3:59] The example of Jesus, as far as God is concerned, is the same as that of Adam; He created him from dust, then said to him, "Be," and he was.
Letīs continue with īSurat Maryam,ī to see what happened to her later [19/ 27-34]
19:27] She came to her family, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have committed something that is totally unexpected.
19:28] "O descendant of Aaron, your father was not a bad man, nor was your mother unchaste."
19:29] She pointed to him. They said, "How can we talk with an infant in the crib?"
19:30] (The infant spoke and) said, "I am a servant of GOD. He has given me the scripture, and has appointed me a prophet.
19:31] "He made me blessed wherever I go, and enjoined me to observe the Contact Prayers and the obligatory charity for as long as I live.
19:32] "I am to honor my mother; He did not make me a disobedient rebel.
19:33] And peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I get resurrected." 19:34] That was Jesus, the son of Mary, and this is the truth of this matter, about which they continue to doubt.
People refused to accept her virgin birth, and started thinking meanly about her, but God supported her with another miracle, that is when the Christ spoke, defending his mother. For sure there are some differences between Islam and Christianity concerning Mother Mary and Jesus Christ, but there is a strong common ground, which is the belief in the virgin birth and the purity of Mother Mary. The Christ is perceived by Muslims as a holy prophet who came to accomplish the message of his lineage. Letīs examine the following verses where the Christ was confirming his message to the Children of Israel [3/ 49-51]
3:49] As a messenger to the Children of Israel: "I come to you with a sign from your Lord - I create for you from clay the shape of a bird, then I blow into it, and it becomes a live bird by Godīs leave. I restore vision to the blind, heal the leprous, and I revive the dead by Godīs leave. I can tell you what you eat, and what you store in your homes. This should be a proof for you, if you are believers.
3:50] "I confirm previous scripture - the Torah - and I revoke certain prohibitions imposed upon you. I come to you with sufficient proof from your Lord. Therefore, you shall observe God, and obey me.
3:51] "God is my Lord and your Lord; you shall worship Him alone. This is the right path."
I wonder always that wouldnīt that common ground be sufficient for all Muslims and Christians to live together in peace and harmony? Why there is always a margin of skepticism and distrust? Why there are always some people, from here or there, who try their hardest to defame this religion or that belief? There are scores of books, articles and researches, here or there, that question the genuineness of this or that belief. Why donīt we consider the belief in Mother Mary and Jesus Christ, by both Muslims and Christians, to be as a bridge that joins both faiths?
I would end this part with this verse from the Quran that pronounces and sums up the general belief of Muslims [3/ 84]
3:84] Say ( unto them O Mohammed), "We believe in God, and in what was sent down to us, and in what was sent down to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction among any of them. To Him alone we are submitters."
