Asalamu Alaikum,

I think I've told this story before on here but this was at a lecture..Anyways, I was at a Dr. Zakir Naik Convention this year and the womens section was in another building with a huge screen and speakers hooked up.

When I entered, I took my hijaab off and started making my way through the rows to find a good seat, when an old woman starts tugging on my abaya insistently. When I look down, I see this fuming face she says "Do you know that the area in which the name of Allah is said is covered with angels!? How can you be so hayaless and take your hijaab off in front of them!?!?" I told her it wasn't a big deal and she shook her head vigourously and gestured towards the huge screen 'And what about Zakir Bhai!?!? "....

At that point....I really had no words. SuhbhanAllah.

Hahahaha.

Interestingly enough, Islam-qa just put up a fatwa that said women can read the Quran without hijab.

Why didn't you just humor her and ask "Can he see me or you?"

Asalamu Alaikum,

Wanted to keep the story concise but initially when she asked about the angels I asked her "Okay,What about the two angels on your shoulders? How much have they seen of you?" It just mad her more mad, people started staring, and when she brought up Dr.Zakir naik, it really just became a lost cause.

I've always found it interesting when any mention of Islam or anything remotely Islamic induces immediate dupatta-tugging and head-covering behavior in women (esp. in people that don't normally observe hijab). Like when I was in Pakistan, I noticed a lot of my relatives covering their heads when the Azaan was being given outside or when someone at home was discussing an Islamic topic.

Yes. It seems like those muslim women still have some form of modesty and respect in their heart. Is that bad or good?

Haha, by the way, I could not figure out how to message you. Your profile is on private, and I can't seem to rep you either. But in response to your message: you have nothing to apologize for; the fault was all mine.

I'll be honest, jack. I have no idea who you are.

Well, I would agree that a prerequisite for attending a madressa or Islamic university (or studying the traditional way) should be a secular bachelor's degree...it should be like getting into grad school or professional school.

Fi Aman Allah.
some of the greatest scholars who ever existed never had any secular education. and plus, i dont think he meant going to some formalized school to learn Islam.

As-Salam Alaykum.

Bismillah.

Bro, that does not mean that those great scholars would not have attained secular education had they lived in today's day and age.

Surely you can see the utility of a secular education alongside a religious one.

Having said that, I agree with you that it is absurd to place anything above religion. I also agree that there are many scholars alive even today who are amazing, even though they have not had any secular education. I'm just saying that making it a pre-requisite cannot hurt. That's all.

Fi Aman Allah.

isnt it true that pre-colonial times madrassah's didnt only teach islamic sciences but "secular" ones as well?

either way...i heard that in jordan it is the students who get 50% go to learn sharia...as opposed to the 90% ones who go to become doctors...it should be the other way around in my opinion...
