Re: Reverts/Interested in Islam
Here's my conversion story:
Quote:
I believe I first got interested in Islam back in 2006 when I was a senior in high school. I had a class where we would talk about world events, and Islam was constantly in the news. The Cartoons, bombings, 9/11, blah blah blah. I lived in a fairly white and Christian place, so I couldn't see Muslims in real life to see what Islam was really like.
I never belonged to a religion. My adoptive parents follow Christianity, so I have alot of knowledge of Christianity, but I never followed it. It never made sense to me. I never belonged to a religion, but I pretty much believed in God to an extent. I was Agnogstic (spelled correctly?), but basically floating around.
After hearing about Islam constantly in the news, I decided to investigate and see what all the fuss was about. I also belong to alot of online forums (unfortunately it takes up too much time ), and on one forum, a member said that he converted to Islam. That got my interest even more. I decided to go to Muslim forums and ask questions. When I look back at some of the questions I asked, it's almost laughable to see how ignorant I was. For example, I asked if Muslims are taught to hate Jews, and if not where does this impression come from and stuff like that. I also liked the idea that I would have a clean slate if I convert to Islam. I had done very bad things in the past, like getting in trouble with cops/hurt things/etc. I was ashamed of what I had done and wanted to move on. Islam offered that
I got very positive replies. When asked about the Jewish question, they explained their situation with Palestine, and I asked about how Islam views certain things. I was directed to more Islamic websites that basically taught converts how to be Muslim. Come January 2007, I'm basically living like a Muslim. I had given up pork and alchohol, and I sort of "dressed Muslim", by wearing natural colored clothing (brown shirt/pants, etc). When I look back, I can't believe I went to high school looking like a piece of feces, but oh well.
Now, I was basically living like a Muslim, but my problem was that I had no contact to Islam in the real world. I knew no Muslims, had no idea where I could find a Mosque, etc. At the end of my senior year in high school, someone from a Muslim forum I go to sent me a message saying that I lived not too far from him and there was a Mosque close by and asked if I could meet up with him. The day after school let out, I asked my dad if he could drop me off at the Mosque. I met the person from the forum, and he had me talk to the imam and he asked me some questions. I was ready to reciet shahada.
Before Jummah began (I converted on Friday, May 18, 2007), he had me sit in front of the congregation with the imam. The imam would reciet the shahada and I would repeat after him, and we were to do this 3 times. I was so nervous. The imam had a heavy accent and spoke very quietly, so I couldn't understand him a few times, and he would repeat himself. I was turning red from embarrassment and sweating. I finally recieted shahada. The imam then told the congregation "welcome Brother Ahmad to Islam" and everyone yelled "Allahu Akbar" several times. Everyone then proceded to hug me with the "hug-three-times-and-is-very-confusing-for-the-convert" hug.
So yeah, I've been Muslim ever since. I know I'm not the best Muslim, and I know I slip up every now and then, but alhumdilillah (Praise be to God) I follow Islam at all.

Re: Reverts/Interested in Islam
Like JInnz said, different people convert for different reasons.
I did for the Chicks. Hot Chicks
NO amount of preaching would turn me..its all about the beauty..
so give them a reliable translation of the Quran and go from there.

Re: Reverts/Interested in Islam
I've started collecting some resources here - » converts online rihla
And there's a new book out by zaytuna soon that I have high hopes for - http://www.zaytuna.org/newsletter/publications.html - someone who's going to ISNA is going to see if they're selling it and will get me a copy if they do inshaAllah.
