Before discussing this, it might be prudent to first discuss the status of the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam).

Re: What constitutes love of the Prophet Muhammad (peave be upon him)?
Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) instructs the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) in the Qur'an to tell the believers that if they love Allah, they must love the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) as well:
"Say to them: If you love God, follow (and love and honor) me, and God will love you" (3:31)
He (subhana wa ta'ala) warns the people of the consequences of loving others over Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) and the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam):
"Say: If it be that your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your mates, or your kindred; the wealth that ye have gained; the commerce in which ye fear a decline: or the dwellings in which ye delight - are dearer to you than Allah, or His Messenger, or the striving in His cause;- then wait until Allah brings about His decision: and Allah guides not the rebellious."
The Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "None of you believes until he loves me more than he loves his children, his parents, and all people." In another narration, he (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) said "None of you believes until he loves me more than he loves himself."

Re: What constitutes love of the Prophet Muhammad (peave be upon him)?
My computer is not complying with my demands.
"Proclaim:" If your parents, your children, your siblings, your spouses, your family, the money you have earned, a business you worry about, and the homes you cherish are more beloved to you than God and His messenger, and the striving in His cause, then just wait until God brings His judgment." God does not guide the wicked people." 9:24
About himself the Prophet Muhammad salAllahu alayhi wa salam said "Allah has sent me as an apostle so that I may demonstrate perfection of character, refinement of manners and loftiness of deportment." (Malik, Mawatta; Ahmed, Musnad; Mishkat)
It took me forever just to post this...

Re: What constitutes love of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)?
Love of all kinds has different levels.
The lowest form is admiring someone for some quality or station that you don't have that they have been given from Allah.
The middle one is following that person's commands and abstaining from what they have forbidden you, whether or not you understand it.
The highest stage is loving what that person loves and hating what that person hates- even to the point of adopting things that they did that they did not command people to do.
