its also analogous to how we refuse a handshake with the opposite gender, if they're non-muslims, they get offended no matter how you explain your cultural limitations

I can't recall anyone getting offended when I did not shake their hand. And it happens regularly.

I don't. My husband is a recent tablighi, a lot of his friends don't look at me at all. I'm not offended by that either.

handshake is gesture typically accompanying a greeting depending on the culture.
