Actually, the Mother is the Childs first teacher.
I wasn't brought up in a Muslim house but many people have told me(including scholars) that the Patriarch is the Mufti of the household. I took it mean that they pass down the knowledge.

hmm.... but how often does that actually happen? Think about it, if the man is outside the home earning all day, and only has a few hours each night to spend with the kids, how much of an opportunity does he actually have to pass down knowledge compared with a woman in a traditional setup? I think the reality is more like: the husband is responsible to make sure the children learn, be it through school, or by directing the wife to teach them/educating the wife.

Challenging Patriarchy are we Timbit?

I'm pretty sure the "protection of lineage" is part our religion. An example............adopted children cannot be given the family name. In part this is done to ensure that paternal identity is preserved.....an adopted child can still marry into the adopted family (as creepy as it could be lol). There are probably more compelling reasons out there but there's at least one to consider for now.

Also....if you look at the Prophets (may peace be upon them all) paternal lineage seems to be an important issue in both Biblical and Quranic accounts.

Always.

You don't think paternal identity can be preserved in any other way?

Maybe......maybe not.

The thing is.....why complicate this? It looks like there are compelling theological reasons to maintain this practice.

I'm not seeing any Islamic basis for giving a kid solely his father's name. Really. The adoption thing... it's like you asked and answered your own question.

Haha.......it's like a rorschach ink blot test.......you see what you want to see. It's actually calligraphy by that "aerosol arabic" guy who does murals and stuff.

Anyways sister, I vaguely remember that preservation of lineage (hifs-al-nasl) is one of the 5 objectives of Shariah according to legislators. I'll point you to some links later on insha'allah.

assalamu alaykum

Timbit: did you find anything on sunnipath? I don't really see the point of making up last names lol, what would you name them?

I've kept my last name , but I think it just makes SENSE for the kids to have their father's name.

Alright Timbit,

Here's some material for you to consider taken from Mohammad Hashim Kamali's excellent "Maqasid Al Shariah: The Objectives of Islamic Law"

Quote:
“The ‘ulama’ have classified the entire range of masalih-cum-maqasid into three categories in a descending order of importance, beginning with the essential masâlih, or daruriyyat, followed by the complementary benefits, or hajiyyat, and then the embellishment tahsiniyyat. The essential interests are enumerated at five, namely faith, life, lineage, intellect and property. These are, by definition, essential to normal order in society as well as to the survival and spiritual well being of individuals, so much so that their destruction and collapse will precipitate chaos and collapse of normal order in society. The Shari’ah seeks to protect and promote these values and validates measures for their preservation and advancement.”

So the question is....if you're prepared to accept the fact that the preservation of lineage is of paramount importance from a Shariah perspective why would you purposely throw a wrench into a machine that is working just fine? Your proposition is unnecessarily disruptive to say the least.

Why does it have to be the patriarchal lineage that needs to be preserved?

its pretty self explanatory, sis. We are supposed to know our heritage and our names are a big part of that. Second point is that shame is a socially defined phenomenon and all of our cultures would definitely consider it shameful to do what this guy did. Even westerners, who dont value family heritage and ties as much we do would consider shameful to do something like that (in many cases)

But we live in a diverse world where people are free to throw away the traditions of their cultures. If there are muslim guys out there who would degrade their family in the way you described, then i'm sure there are muslim girls out there who want them to do so. Heck, a girl could probably find desperate shameless guys out there who would change their own name to their wife's family name if she looked hard enough. Everybody's free to do whatever they want.

ws
WORD.

Because she resents men. There are some women who shouldn't get married until they get over their resentment of the opposite sex just as there are some men eg GotFive
