Default What is a Wahhabi?

All right let's at first get our premises clear and well-defined. I've noticed that a large portion of self-appointed cyber-mujtahids on this forum have a knack for condemning anyone who even dares to talk about shirk, bid'ah and various such issue as a "Wahhabi". Effectively putting a bar on any sort of discussion. The term is used in a demeaning manner meant to insult and tarnish the opponent. However, when asked about what defines a Wahhabi and what entails being a Wahhabi, their true prowess and 'knowledge' is revealed as they either fall into ad hominem rants or strawman diatribes. So my simple question to these immaculate defenders of faith is to kindly define who or what is a Wahhabi in an educated manner.

An intelligent discussion concerning this on Islamica?

That'll be a first...

In order to benefit the discussion, the following concepts should also be discussed:

- Ahl ul Hadeeth v. Ahl ul Ray
- Hanbali madhab
- Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah
- Reformist Sufism
- Islamism

salaams to all
here in South Africa the Bareillwi's generally call the tablighi guys wahhabis- what a joke.but we dont blame them- they are ignorant.
in saudi, the real wahhabi guys dont like tablighis- even spat on my cousins face.
if you go deep into their understanding of Islam- you will see that they hold all, except those who see things their way, in very low esteem- like the Zionists see everyone else.

jazakallah

Humm, well this does seem unlikely on Islamica.

Well let's give the Islamicans a platform. Maybe educated guesses are too much, how about the wahhabi bogeyman they've concocted in their feeble imaginations?

Mr. masood: You are generalizing, tablighis are quite active in saudi aswell, and shaykh al-'uthaymeen (ra) had some encouraging words about them.

Any respectable and sensible posts are the target of neggs from stupid islamicans. And that sucks because the stupid islamicans have the highest # of repps, their neggs are enough to destroy our usernames and passwords.

I think 'cause "Wahhabi" has generally come to mean somebody extreme. And extreme has come to mean somebody who is very orthodox in practice.

Wow so being orthodox makes one a wahhabi. That's an interesting definition.

Colloquially... yeah, I think so. I guess you could say it's one of those words which has been thoroughly co-opted.

So yeah... that was not a definition. I was trying to explain some people's stream of consciousness.

I see. Okay. So who would you label as a Wahhabi, regardless of how accurate or inaccurate you may be in your assessment?

If someone is orthodox in practice when it comes to Islam... isn't that exactly what they're supposed to be doing?

I.E- Following the fudamentals?

You would think so, except that Orthodox and Fundamentalist are kind of bad words that have been linked with terrorism a few times too many. I think that's why a lot of people want to shy away from those labels, however accurate and correct they may be.

Right, and what purpose does creating such an imagery and then reinforcing it serve? It is obvious; to undermine muslims who even dare questions things that are innovations in deen and question status quo of certain practices...etc...

When has orthodox ever been linked with terrorism?
