Default I want to Live in Doubts and the Doubtful

Nu'man ibn Bashir (ra) reported that he heard Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu 'alayhi wasallam) say,

"The lawful is plain and the unlawful is plain. Between them are doubtful matters that most people do not know about. He who avoids the doubtful has kept his religion and honor clear. But he who falls into doubtful falls into unlawful as the shepherd who grazes around a sanctuary, almost grazing therein..."

Kumushkhanawi comments:

"The lawful is plain", that is, clear and its lawfulness apparent, "and the unlawful is plain. Between them are doubtful matters." These are unclear as to whether they are lawful or prohibited due to conflicting proofs and meanings, "that most people do not know about". Rather, only a few know about their ruling, and they are those firm-footed in their knowledge. But if the evidence is probablistic, open to the possibility of unlawfulness, then it is scrupulousness to leave it, as he indicated: "He who avoids the doubtful". Avoid [ittiqa] is from [the same linguistic root as] taqwa [piety], which linguistically means, "placing a shield or barrier around the self." In the context of the Sacred Law, it means protecting the self from sins and whatever that leads to them...Thus, the one who is careful about his religion does not come close to which could lead to error. The central purpose of this is to estabish clear proof for leaving the doubtful matters. As scrupulousness inclines the heart towards righteousness, and the lack of it [inclines the heart] toward sin..."

(taken from "Sufism & Good Character translated by Faraz Rabbani)

Subhan Allah now think how many of the things we discuss on this forum come under 'Doubtful'?

I've also read in another explanation, can't remember where, that doubtful is also proportional to the amount we KNOW. Now think about it, how many things do we talk about that we have absolutely little or NO knowledge about? Aren't we opening the doors to more doubts and ultimately to sins?

Im not sure about opening up the doors to more doubts, but opening the doors to trying to understand. I mean it go either way, but usually when you have doubts about something, then you probably shouldnt do it.

Any other thread I would've been ok with that bro. But it defeats the purpose of the thread, becuase I personally consider music to be from the "doubtful" matters.

Just so that we are on the same page. Islamically "doubtful" especially in the context of this hadith is even worse than falling into Haram.

Like I've found a scholar that says music is ok under circumstances, the lyrics arent going against islam and its practices and such. and some other stuff. Which to me I feel is fine.

Like a lot of things in Islam makes sense, its logical and its to help you benefit from it. But I dont see anything wrong in listening to instruments. I may sound bad for sayign that but thats how I feel and thats the only thing I feel unsure about.

ok, so its worse to think something or to be unsure than to do something that is haram and do it knowling that it is haram?

Like I know that MAJORITY say its Haram (see Reliance). But then comes along the scholar you know who says it's ok, so it puts you into doubt about what the Majority says. Soon enough you start doubting everything that majority says, and you end up as the Truthful one said.

I'm kidding yaar.

I have the same love-hate, on-again, off-again relationship w/ music.

yea that's what I mean. A few years back I decided to stop listening altogether. It worked for one year, then I discovered nasheeds and started listening to them and slowly got back into listening to music. I'll get in the car and flip on the radio and listen to whatever's on or while I'm studying or chatting I'll sometimes listen to music. I have no problem with music at weddings etc but everyday listening, I'm not so sure about. Actually for me personally I found whenever I didn't listen to music it was easier to concentrate on prayer and my memory was better when it came to studying for school.
