Hijab and Earrings
I've tried to pose this question on Sunnipath, but they had reached their submission's limit for the day, thus I thought why not try Islamica. Now I know that most of you aren't scholars, however I'd appreciate your input.
This is the thing, many hijabis who are otherwise modestly dressed (cover their necks, draw their veils over their chests etc.) also show their earlobes, that are adorned with earrings. I'm sure you've observed this too, or maybe you even wear your hijab like that?
I feel that it's sort of wrong, but my personal sentiments aside, what is the Islamic view on this?

Re: Hijab and Earrings
I also believe its wrong. Sorry I don't have any textual backings but if you think about it logically women are supposed to fully cover so that they dont attract the attention of men. Now if they're showing off their ears that kinda undermines the point of the whole covering concept. Its like when you wear a tight fitting obaya with a hijab...sure your covering, but everyone can see your general shape.
Covering = Keeping a mans gaze away
shiny stuff = attraction

Re: Hijab and Earrings
I disagree,
If a sister is pretty, Then she will be pretty whether she wears a abaya or not. So her covering up does not necessarily prevent men from looking at her. However it will help in terms of pervy men not staring at her or perhaps.. I dont know how men think but i'm assuming they get a kick out of looking at a attractive woman or something etc.
1) I too have seen many women with earrings on, I dont really have an opinion on the matter, its their choice and i'm sure they do so with knowledge as opposed to ignorance.
2) I have friends who wear a abaya ( that are a size bigger believe it or not) yet their shape is still rather obvious, So Br Captain sisters are only obliged to cover what is apperant.

Re: Hijab and Earrings
The ears are a part of the body which need to be concealed anyway. So no it is not permissible at all to uncover them let alone wear ornamentation like that in front of strange men.

Re: Hijab and Earrings
I'm not talking about whether a sister is pretty or not sister, and what effects that has. I'm just showing that adorning shiny objects such as earings attract people, not in a sexual sense, but a glint catches their eyes.
Lets suppose we have a girl properly covered and a brother who always keeps hiz gaze away. Now suppose that same brother catches the glint of the properly covered girl with her earings showing, he'll unintentionally be caught into seeing her face, whereas if she wasn't wearing them in the first place he would still have his gaze down.
Your true that a perv will get a kick out of looking at a girl either way, but atleast this way the modest men keep their gazes clean at all times, the modest women avoid unneccisary attraction and the perverted men will know that the girl whose dressed modestly isn't "open for action"
Peace Sis

Wearing a tight abaya defies an important aspect of islamic clothing etiquette: not wearing clothes that reveal the shape of one's body. I don't think those two things are comparable.
Also, and far be it that I am trying to condone either part, but shiny stuff is not the sole source of attraction.

I guess the underlying question here is whether the ear (or more specifically the ear lobe) is apart of the face or not?

Re: Hijab and Earrings
Let's put it simply like this:
Why are the earrings shown? Coz they look pretty.
Islamically, should the earrings be on display anyway? No.
Islamically, are earrings a necessity in terms of dress-code? No.
Therefore, it's pretty obvious that earrings which are on display are done to make the wearer feel good or coz they wanna look pretty.
Please do not think I look down on girls who wear Hijaab and earrings on full display coz end of the day only Allah SWT knows who is a better Muslim and who isn't.
Kellyjaz - as for the pretty issue - yes, ur right, if a girl is pretty she will be looked at regardless anyway, but it is our own duty to do what we can to attract as least attention as possible. That doesn't mean dress in rags and smell, but putting your earrings on display is not exactly following the rules either.
Anyway, like I said, only Allah SWT knows what is in our hearts, and for those girls that wear the Hijaab properly (i.e. covering their chest) and still show their big funky pretty earrings, at least they still wear the Hijaab.. inshAllah we will all take steps to improve ourselves inshAllah..
But Islamically, the answer is still in the negative, that we mustn't show our ears, and especially not attracting jewellry on our ears.

That's what some Westerners say about mini-skirts (They're just mini-skirts, nobody will get horny off them)
It's not right to try to justify it whenI slamically the rules are there for us. It is upto the individual to follow them and then face the consequences.

Re: Hijab and Earrings
Its not about the ears tinker and obviously shiny stuff isn't the only way of attracting pax, but if your out in public and need to get bussiness done, you need to keep your attraction level to a minimum. Sure show off your ear rings to your hubby and lady friends, but if we're talking about in public I don't see any other purpose of doing so, do you?
And I was using the tight fitting obaya as an example only.

No, you have a point, but a sister's duty is to generate the least amount of attraction towards herself. So if you are naturally beautiful, do your best not to show it off.
Also, you wont loose your shape if you wear an abaya or a head-to-toe jelbaab, but I suppose those are the two options that conceal you the best.
Not when it is windy though. I hate abayas when it is windy.

Doesn't that apply to bangles and nose-rings aswell?
That's the greatest argument my earring-displaying friends have against me. Now I don't wear a nose-ring, but I do love my bangles.

Re: Hijab and Earrings
I bet there's gonna be some sisters now who jump in and say "It's not my fault dirty pervy men can't keep their eyes to themselves!!"
I agree to that to an extent but I also am fully aware of my Islamic duties and the rules.
End of the day, the rules are there for us, we either follow them or not and face the consequences. I don't follow all of them and know I am weak in that area but am fully aware I will be held accountable for my own weaknesses/negligence.
