What is Islam to you?
Salaams
This is pretty much a continuation of the interesitng discussion of the DWA thread I started yesterday. There were some cools points coming up but I felt that I was using Dawuds name in a negative manner.
To me the Quran is the be all and end all of this religion, no matter what I have read, been told. The traditionalsit way of thinking really isn't my cup of chai. I've seen some vicious debates online and in real life which strikes me as odd as we all supposedly follow the same book.
We were discussiong the notion of Quran and HAdith and how certain epople view and utilize hadith.
Feel free to start where you left off.
I think there is a large proportion of reverts/converts and born Muslims that are rethinking how they view certain aspects of Traditional thought. Would you say this is an accurate statement? Or am I talking out of my backside?

This is nothing new. It happened even during the time of the Prophet [s] and during the time of the Rashidoon. The new converts from far off lands would bring innovations into the faith, mixing their cultural understanding into the religion. The new converts were not grounded in the fundamentals of the faith, so they were liable to make many mistakes.
The same is the case today, and many Western converts mix their "Eurocentric" ideals with Islam.

Its a complete way of life with the Quran and Sunnah as its two main sources of reference.

Thanks for the insight Jaysh what do you define as Eurocentric?
Converts aren't the offenders when it comes to mixing culture and religion. I'd argue they are fairly low on the scale in that regard.

That's what they always think/say/claim.
If you had said that 'converts are not the ONLY ones...', then I'd definitely agree with you. But you said 'convert's aren't the offenders...', I gotta disagree with that.
Every group of people tends to mix their culture into Islam, INCLUDING converts. Oftentimes, converts try to mix their 'post-enlightenment' thinking and modernism into Islam.

Re: What is Islam to you?
The concept of only looking at the Qur'an and seeing as the be all end all is an overly simplistic concept which can lead to much confusion. It begs the question "who's interpretation of the Qur'an?" and "what if the Qur'an does not explicitly speak about such a matter?"
Also, many people who view the Qur'an as the be all end all tend to use their own personal views of what the Qur'an should be. This is very indivudalist (a very modern/Western concept) which is contrary to the sunnah.

Re: What is Islam to you?
I look at it as a guidebook I could live my life by. Also, a means to get to know my Creator and purpose in life.

Re: What is Islam to you?
There is no "Islam", there are IslamS and each interpretation is just as subjective as the other but some more so than the rest.
Traditionalism doesn't have an exclusive hold on truth, but in my opinion, its better than anything else out there.
Also, rejecting hadeeth can be construed as kufr.

Re: What is Islam to you?
Assalamualaikum
Simply put; it is the truth, that which is. A calling for the recognition of the central truth of the existence of the Supreme Being.
Once we have recognised this truth we can begin to understand other truths including the solutions provided by Islam for spritual, social and political contexts (thus becoming 'a way of life').
Hope that made some sense , Allah SWT knows best
Wassalamualaikum Warahmatullah
Yahya

Man, I don't even like that song. But after my encounter with this idiot yesterday (see my latest post in the Cracked Out RL Conversations thread), I think maybe it needs more publicity. ![]() | |
