What about the other filthy animals?
Asalaamwalaikum,
I understand why pig and pork is prohibited in Islam. They are filthy animals. However, what about other animals who are also filthy, eat their own feces, bathe in swine, and are just not always cleanly animals? Im sure we have all witnessed animals such as chickens, cows and goats doing similar dirty things as pigs.
Ask Imam :: Fatwa

What about all the other animals that we routinely eat?

salams
You could give all the physiological differences between pigs and all the other animals, but at the end of the day it really and simply comes down to the fact that God forbade the flesh of swine, and that's all we need to know.

My neighbor raised chickens and turkeys, as well as cows. My other neighbor raised horses. I never saw the cows eating their own filth, or the chickens either. For the cows, the hay was placed on a platform for them to eat. I if some of the hay fell off the platform, they wouldn't eat it. I had another friend who had free-range cows. They didn't graze by where they pooped. With chickens it was a similar story. They were kept in a coop that had a small enclosed area where they could run. When it rained, water would pool in the yard, but they would only drink water from their dish. With my neighbors horses, they would either eat hay from the platform, or reach over the fence to eat grass from our field. They wouldn't eat grass next to where they pooped.
They may be unclean in other ways (have ticks, be smelly or something) but I never witnessed animals eating their own poop, or drinking water that could be contaminated with poop.
And yes, that is my own personal observation. Maybe the animals I witnessed were weird, I don't know.

Re: What about the other filthy animals?
Asallamu 'alaikum wa rahmatulLahi wa barakatuh
Any species that eats corpses, feces, or is otherwise impure is haram to eat. If it is not of its nature, then it would have to be raised in a clean place, eating clean things, and then it would become halal to eat after a certain period and one is sure it is no longer impure.
Wa Allahu a'lam.

If they're bathing in swine, I'm pretty sure that's not natural

i'm not sure if people are ready for my take on an answer, but here goes. like chotoo mentioned, normally, halal animals don't eat their own feces or otherwise partake in activities that render them haram to eat. but in the US in particular, where huge "farming" operations run the vast majority of animal harvesting (cattle, poultry, etc.), unfortunately, we find substandard conditions where the animals are forced to eat things they normally wouldnt (other animals, feces, etc) and live in unclean conditions.
so, while we haven't heard much in the way of fatwas yet regarding eating such meat, i'm sure we will start hearing about it, and its certainly worth considering.
