Default Funny Religious Questions

Assalamalaykumwarathmatullahbaraktuhu

So a friend sent me a question on FB, keep in mind she's a med student and I did an internship with her in a University Hospital in the Cancer Research Dept a couple of years ago.

FRIEND: Hi, while doing some reading online I came across this peculiar information. It seems to say that a woman is required to pray while giving childbirth (if it doesn't hurt the baby). I have never heard this before, so I wanted to know if you know anything more about this.

from Perculiar Personal Problems of Men and Women

ABOUT SALAT

1 : If one is giving birth to a child but only a small portion of the child had appeared, then also it is Fard (obligatory) to offer Salat, provided she is conscious. To give up Salat is not proper. But if offering of Salat endangers the life of the child, then she is allowed to give up Salat. In the same way, if the mid-wife thinks that offering of Salat on her part may harm the child to be born, then she also cane give up the Salat. But all of them should offer compensatory Salt as soon as possible.

ME: salaam
LOOOOLLLz well its a preposterous thing to even propose
has this person ever witnessed/given childbirth? they couldn't even spell woman right.
Islam is a simple reasonable religion.

I had to share.

From Jaysh's response, I would have to agree with you Haramoobobi.

Jaysh...I repeat what she mentioned: have you ever given/witnessed childbirth? Ask any woman who has and she will tell you that standing up to pray, let alone shifting to a different position, is difficult and/or painful when you're having contractions (if you have sisters/mothers/wives you will know how bad cramps can get...multiply that by 1000 and there's a contraction for you)...plus there's a freakin watermelon-sized object squeezing out of...well. You get the idea.

ok so...praying during your period is haraam and after childbirth there is a period of days where i think the mom cant fast and has to do wudu before each prayer or something because there is "uncleanliness" due to discharge/bleeding if im not mistaken. So you mean to say that while there is a baby and blood and in most cases involuntary poop popping out from down there (not to mention excruciating pain), it's okay to pray? How do you expect the mother in labor is going to keep her wudu?

Anyway. I've got a funny answer to a religious question.

Ok so my dad kept delaying my marriage and everybody involved was getting very frustrated and tired of it. So I called a religious organization (Shariahboard of America) in Chicago to see how we could resolve the situation or go ahead and do it without my dad (yes it had gotten that bad) and a hafiz put me in touch with one of the maulvis.

We communicated on the phone and through the hafiz who acted like a middle man. The maulvi asked my background etc and about my parents. I replied that my dad is Muslim, used to be nonpracticing (drinking etc) in college but now he practices. My mom was non-Muslim when they married and only recently converted. They were married the Islamic way first, then had a Church wedding, then had a bigger wedding in Pakistan where the whole Islamic nikkah was redone in front of everyone. He asked if me and my siblings practice and I said yes...my sister and I pray alhamdulillah and wear hijab etc. The maulvi then said that because my mother was non-Muslim (Christian) and my dad was nonpracticing, my parents' nikkah was invalid and void and that they have been living in sin for the last 20+ years. As a result all their children are deemed kafir once they reach puberty and the only solution is to 1) Get the parents' nikkah redone and 2) Have all the children and both parents say the Shahada in an official setting.

That was the end of that. My fiance (now husband) was on 3-way and I could hear him trying to keep his cool at that. How stuuuuupid.

Sister, I did not say that I agree with the opinion. (I have no idea what the ruling would be.) I merely said that it is not preposterous as Sister Haramabobi was making it out to be. I am critical of Sister Haramabobi's approach to the matter.

okay i think we had a bit of a misunderstanding so i apologize. I dont see anything wrong with having to pray at early stages of labor when its not so far along but when the fatwa says the mother has to pray even if the baby's head is showing that is ridiculous and that's the scenario that i was talking about (saying one has to pray in that state is silly).

All I think sister is that we should refrain from passing judgment on certain statements before we inquire what is meant by them. Oftentimes the scholars mean one thing, but we interpret them in another way. This leads to misunderstanding.

^^Yup. But sometimes some scholars say things that go against every ounce of common sense, like when one told me that my parents are adulterers (neither ever had relations outside of marriage) and that me and my siblings who are practicing Muslims are kafir.
