Default What does the word "Ahle Bayt" mean?

Salaams,

The word Ahle Bayt has been used three times in Quran. And at one point the word was used for Musa alaehis salaam, to refer to some woman who should feed him.

The word usually refers to one's immediate family, which includes wives and kids. And its both wives and kids who come to mind instantly when someone asks "how is your family/ahle bayt".

Once Muhammad saaw especially called Hassan and Hussain (as) covered them in His chador and said that they are my Ahle Bayt too.

Actually the words "Ahle Bayt" are never used in the Qur'an. The words "Ahl al-Bayt" are used. Persians convert this to "Ahle Bayt" because their language lacks the definite article.

I have been maligned for no reason. I only respond. Like for like. I do not initiate or aggress against them.

In any case, I think this thread should be deleted. I ask dear brother H2H to do that. Because there is NO WAY that this thread will remain peaceful.

I will try to answer the question without inciting any sectarianism. I will merely respond by saying that the Sunnis and the Shias differ on who is Ahl al-Bayt.

Shia Viewpoint

The Shias say that the Ahl al-Bayt consists of 14 people only:

1. Prophet Muhammad [s]
2. Ali [ra]
3. Fatima [ra]
3. Hasan [ra]
5. Hussayn [ra]
6. The rest of their 12 Imams

And sometimes they include Salman al-Farisi [ra] as well.

Sunni Viewpoint

The Sunnis say that the Ahl al-Bayt consists of:

1. The Prophet’s wives
2. The Prophet’s children
3. The Prophet’s freed slaves
4. Ahl al-Kisa (People of the Cloak, i.e. Ali ibn Abi Talib’s family)
5. The family of Aqil
6. The offspring of Jafar
7. The offspring of Abbas
8. Salman al-Farsi

The major dispute then between Sunnis and Shias about this matter is if the Prophet's wives are included in Ahl al-Bayt, because this would include Bibi Aisha [ra] and Bibi Hafsa [ra]. You can see how this would be an issue.

Anyways, I will not post evidence to support my position, just because that will cause a cage match to the death.

I urge you to delete this thread, and message me on MSN instead bro.

I didn't malign you. I was posting based on my observation that threads where you AND some shia post often end up in flame wars. That's all.

This is one of those things where I don't get the point of people arguing over it. Why should anyone really care?? Say Allahu Alim and end it. Gosh.

you dont need to be sunni anyways, its clear, plain and simple in the quran.

“O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other of the women; If you will be on your guard, then be not soft in your speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease yearn; and speak a good word. And stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display, like that of the former Times of Ignorance; and establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity; and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah only wishes to remove all abomination from you, you Ahlel Bayt (People of the House), and to make you pure and spotless.” (Quran, 33:32-33)

Salaams,

Yeah like many other words, if we pronounce it in arabic it'll be ahl al-bayt.

And this one could also end up being a fighting thread. But I only wanted to highlight this simple point, that Ahle Bayt always include wives as well. You wouldn't find a single man these days who would mention his family and not mean his wife+kids.
