in relation to poetry in general - the key thing (i think) is to remember that words are often used in an irregular manner to express love - and the interpretation of phrases/adjectives is never really literal, so poetry cant be anaylsed in the same way you'd analyse a piece of narrative. a play on words if you like. thats what makes poetry what it is. so whenever you read poetry, you have to read it with an open mind...
but the quote you sited we can look at that and i can explain some kind of justifications
"My heart races as I remember, the true nature of your splendor,
How glorious are you? Ya Rasool Allah!"
i think thats striaght forward, contemplating on the miracles that he (saw) did is enough - for example going to see Allah and returning in the blink of an eye, subhanallah.
The universe at your feet, since the arsh is your seat,
How immense a feat? Ya Rasool Allah!
this is because he is the highest of the creation, and again when he (Saw) went on miraj he literally was on the arsh, and thus the universe was at his feet. he (saw) actually went thru the heavens with the same sandals he wore
On that day, I’ll have nothing to say,
Except beg the pardon of you, Ya Rasool Allah!
its established that on the day of judgement we will seek the intercession of the Prophet (SAW) out of desperation
The moon has no right, to illuminate the night,
Without the permission of you, Ya Rasool Allah!
i dont wish to open another can of worms, but as stated in hadith - and explained by sheikh abdul qadir jilani (ra) and many many other classical scholars - that the light of the Prophet (saw) is the first creation, and the light of the sun is but a minute percentage compared to the light of the Prophet (saw).
also, as is well known, he (saw) broke the moon in half when he was a baby, so the word "permission" really is used to show the authority and superiority the Prophet (saw) has over the moon.
The rain that descends, bringing joy that never ends,
Is but a mercy from you, Ya Rasool Allah!
he (saw) is the mercy to the universes. and there are hadith actually about how the reason Allah blesses us with rain is because of the abdaal, (the substitute saints) - due to the blessing they have, Allah blesses the land with rain. - if this is so with awliya, then how about the blessing we receive because of the blessing of the Prophet (saw)?
i hope that makes sense...i dont want to de-rail the thread....but let me know if you think its still a slippery slope :P
uh yeh i did
take care, wasalam.
|
I get it... you're being creative and all that.
But... yes, I think it's a very slippery slope. I'm not comfortable with saying the Prophet SAW has authority over the moon or rain or anything else that only Allah has authority over and I think saying things like that, even if not meant to be taken literally, can lead to bad, bad things like...the dreaded S-word.
Rida: Ahhahaha. Yeah, there are much better translations.

Re: The "Praising the Beloved (saw)" thread
I think poetic license is okay, we don't have to take everything literally, but I agree with Timbit - we have to be careful when talking about these things, and making sure no parallels are made whatsoever between Muhammad (saw) and Allah (swt). There is the danger that some of these poetic verses may be taken in this way.
All these things, like being raised up to the heavens, and the arsh, splitting the moon, making it rain, are all because of Allah, nothing else. All the powers, brilliance and greatness of the Prophet (saw) is because of Allah. In the end, there is nothing but Allah.

dil mein rau shan hain sham'a e ishq e huzuur (sallAllahu alaihi wasallam)
kaash josh e hawas hawaa naa karey.
the light of his (sallAllahu alaihi wasallam) love burns in this heart,
alas! let not the gust of desires blow it out.

i completely agree. of course that is true. but that doesnt mean that in every sentence i have to say "because of Allah he had this. because of Allah he did this....". if people misinterpret your lines of poetry, its their problem, not yours.
qasida burda - "discard what the christians claim about their nabi, then decide and say what you wish in praise of him (saw). and attribute towards his personality whatever you wish of excellence.
"and attribute to his dignified status as much greatness as you wish. for verily excellence of the Messenger of Allah has no limits"
imam abu hanifa (ra) - "whenever i listen, i hear only your remembrance, and when i look, i am able to see nothing besides you" - qasida numaan.
hmm, sounds dodgy? shouldnt imam abu hanifa only hear Allah's remembrance?? how can he only see the Prophet (saw)??? i guess its down to intpretation just because people may misinterpret it, doesnt mean you shouldnt write it. of course, everything the Prophet (saw) has is because of Allah. which dumbo deosnt belive that.

Save yourself from the Hellfire.
Qari Waheed is awesome. My friend gave me an iPod and then my chachu put some music onto it, 'cause I couldn't be bothered to learn to figure it out for myself. And he uploaded a whole bunch of things onto it, but also some naats and I loved it.
My coworker has the biggest collection of Noor Jehan songs that I've ever seen though, so I asked him to put some of those on there too. But then he ended up deleting all my previous things, so now I have all Noor Jehan and no Qari Waheed Zafar. It's a cruel world.
Someday I'm gonna figure out how to get Noor Jehan and Qari Waheed onto the same iPod. Like maybe this weekend.

Re: The "Praising the Beloved (saw)" thread
Unto you I flee from my slips and sins,
and when I meet Allah you are the one sufficient for me
Visiting your grave by foot
is my longing and desire if my Lord wills
So if visitation of him is prevented by my body,
then I am not prevented from visiting him with my heart
To you oh Messenger of Allah I send, from myself,
a salutation of a believer and lover.

Re: The "Praising the Beloved (saw)" thread
Wheresoever it fell, Life itself was revived
Peace be upon that life-bestowing gaze
How delicate the petals of that holy rose!
Peace be upon the exquisiteness of those lips!
From his clustered pearls, radiate those roots of light
Peace be upon the enchantment of those stars!
A mouth whose ev'ry word: divine revelation!
Peace be upon the fount of knowledge and wisdom
Countless blessings upon his lov'ly oratory
Peace be upon his heart-enticing eloquence!
Countless blessings upon the pleasure of his words!
Peace be upon the majesty of his sermons
Fragrant blessings be upon such delicate fragrance!
Peace be upon such lovely, lovely refinement!
