Makruh Things
I guess Mossad deleted his thread about shisha, which had spawned a whole discussion about smoking and whether it's haram or makruh, and then questions from me about what exactly makruh means.
So yes... when I hear "makruh" I think "Yay, not haram; we can do it!"
What does makruh really mean though?
I think Revert posted about two different kinds of makruh.

Re: Makruh Things
Permissible but not advised? Sorta like divorce?

Re: Makruh Things
So makruh things are:
divorce (most hated permissible thing)
smoking (more often than not, it's haram in the modern day apparently)
shrimp?
praying the same surah in every rakaat?
Makruh means detestable?
Zeyneddine: No, I'm not. I hear contradictory things and I like to get the full story. So that's why I read SunniPath for fun.
Let's just make a list of makruh things, k? We can all benefit from it, InshaAllah, 'cause we'll learn about fiqh. Yaaaaay. Fiqh is like my favourite thing in the world.
EDIT:
Also, you're somebody's alter ego, aren't you?

I think this is the first post that I have ever read of yours and already I have come to the conclusion that I don't like you.
Go away.

From the other thread it either meant "really bad" or "really really really bad"

Re: Makruh Things
How can it be really bad if it's not haram?
I'm so confused.

Makruh is something which is not forbidden but also "not recommended." It is not considered a sin, but it is Islamically advised that we avoid the activity for our own sakes.

So what are the two different types of makruh about then, Khairan?
See, the way I learned it: you're not sinned for doing makruh things, but you're rewarded for abstaining from them. But then Revert went and confused me with the two different types of makruh.
Bihari: I'm Hanafi and we eat shrimp 'cause they're like fish apparently. I thought it was makruh in some other madhabs though.

Depends -- I know that at least some shia have "seafood laws" and do not interpret the Qur'anic verses stating that creatures of the water are lawful as meaning ALL water creatures without exception. In general, muslims who observe seafood laws do not eat shellfish, may not eat fish that have no scales, and say that a fish has to be caught alive by a muslim or at least a person of the book in order for it to be halaal.
Incidentally, this is also the reasoning (to my knowledge) behind why some people consider shrimp to be makruh -- it dies very quickly after being caught if removed from water and you generally don't know if the fisherman was a muslim.

I have no idea about the different kinds of makruh -- I want to learn about them also.
