Two U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan convert to Islam:
KABUL (Reuters) - Two American soldiers have converted to Islam and married in Afghanistan, a state newspaper said on Thursday.

A U.S. military spokesman said he was checking the reports and pointed out that freedom of religion was enshrined in the U.S. constitution.
The Hewad Daily reported the pair served as soldiers in the U.S. army at Bagram air base which is the hub of U.S.-led operations in Afghanistan and lies to the north of the capital Kabul.
Several dozen Westerners visiting Afghanistan have become Muslims since the Taliban were toppled in 2001, but it was the first time any U.S. soldiers were reported to have converted to Islam.
A religious cleric welcomed their conversion. "If any body embraces Islam, ..., his sins committed in this world will be forgiven and Allah praises him and his family, and will bless him in the coming world too," Hamidullah said.

Re: Two U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan convert to Islam:
I read in 2004, I believe, of at least one US soldier serving in Iraq who reverted. But at least in the article, it seemed as though he converted in order to marry. Let's hope those aren't the cases here or anytime.
This article says it's been 4, as of 2005, reverts in Iraq.
U.S. Troops Cannot Stop Saddam-Friendly Clans In Triangle of Death
Quote:
Baghdad: Eyewitnesses in the city of Fallujah reported that an American soldier publicly adopted the Muslim faith in one of the city’s mosques, with a crowd of people and clerics in attendance.
Dr. Ziad Al-Fahdawi, a witness to the event, said that the soldier, George Douglas, recited the two creeds [“There is no god but God, and Mohammad is His prophet”] in The Mosque of Mohammad’s Presence after asking the mosque’s imam to witness his conversion to Islam.
Douglas was reported as saying that he is certain that Islam is the best religion that a person could espouse, for its teachings of forgiveness, nobleness, love, righteousness and courage. When Douglas was finished with his declaration, the mosque attendants shouted “Allahou-Akbar” [God is Greater] and embraced and congratulated him.
The American soldier then changed his name, as of May 30th, from George Douglas to Mujahed Mohammad. He also explained that he was very moved by the courage of the people of Fallujah, their stance as Arabs and Muslims, and their readiness to defend their country and to die for the liberation of their land, no matter what pretexts the invaders give for their aggression.
Douglas is the 4th American soldier to embrace Islam in Iraq. Officer Patrick Bett [sp?] declared his conversion to Islam in civil affairs court in the Karakh district and then married Samar Ahmed, an Iraqi doctor who worked at the hospital where the American officer was on duty in August of 2003.
The American officer said that he did not convert to Islam for Dr. Samar, but because he was convinced that the Muslim faith is the best of all religions.

Man, I hope you are joking? Why would there be reports of converts to Islam when the Taliban were in power?

But how is that news worthy? US army man converting to islam is a lot more attention grabbing than a regular non-muslim.

Just so you know, there were many reverts to Islaam during the Taliban rule. As a matter of fact, I have a cousin who just wed a daughter of a sikh (an afghan sikh). The whole family reverted to Islaam and they were known to have been the only sikh family left in our town.
Ohh and also...Mrs Ridley also reverted to Islaam upon meeting and experiencing the Taliban control.
If you want, I can make a survey of how many reverts there really were in Afghanistan during the Taliban rule, the next time I visit Afghanistan. Its very interesting to see people throw out 'facts' that can never be proven true.
As for the man, Abdur-Rahman, that became a Christian worked with a Christian charity that helped refugees in Pakistan. They were also missionaries and so, they convinced him to become Christian. Yet, the Taliban did not have him hanged, like it is stated in the Shari'ah (Islaamic Law). They believed he was not sane, which under the Shari'ah, is a valid reason to keep him alive.
Then again, Wallaahu 'Alaam. We ask Allaah to guide us and the people of Afghaanistan upon the Haqq. Aameen, ya Rabb.

alright, thats it folks. We have ms mumnahs testimony, so I think she wins this argument. Alright, I'll buy your argument for a moment. Do you think the taliban were nice to people who weren't Sunnis or Pashto speaking? I'm curious if you even know anybody like that? Do you know any Hazaras perhaps?

Re: Two U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan convert to Islam:
Yvonne Ridley converted to Islam after reading the Quran and other books and realizing that in reality Islam is the complete antithesis of what the Taliban practice. AT least that's what she says in her interviews. So, what prompted these people to convert to Islam wasn't the good example of the Taliban, it was actually their horrid example.

That's BS the Taliban treatment of Yvonne led to her embracing of Islam, I've heard it from her mouth.

My apologies. I did not mean all pashtun folk.
I was referring to the pashtuns in power (the taliban) during their rule in afghanistan, specifically.
