which Cool people you have chilled with
This thread is dedicated to all those great shuyuks, scholars, and learned people of all time you've spoken to directly or communicated with. Please include your learning experiences and NO sitting in lectures with 1000000 people does not count
Bismillah, I havent had much blessings as of yet, but some day inshaAllah...
I was blessed and honored with speak one on one
with
Imam Zaid Shakir-After RIS lecture session and I went up to him with a question and we had about 10 minutes of discussions. But, his wife kept insisted that he has other things to attend too. as if I am not the_only_one! duh! Those were my 10 beautiful minutes of my life. He almost stepped in our place,(Joking) my house is five minutes away from the masjid where he gave his actual lecture..
Moez Masood:: Young at age, but blessed with wealth of knowledge. I met him during Ramadan while I was about to ask our local imam about the *keys* duh!
Dr. Munir Al Kaseem: Al hamdoulilah, a well known scholar in southwestern ontario. Spoken to him on many occasions and frriends with his family members. He has the ability to cut through your heart, yet with big scientific words (as we know it from 2005 RIS, remember the $$ stolen, he asked the RIS attendees to open up their hearts and arms to donate generously.)
Dr. Omar Abdel Kafy-some might not even know him by his name. but his face is everywhere. he is always aired at Shariah TV (and I watch it). When you're listening to him, Islam seems simple as it really should be. Very logical. love him! Had the honor to speaking to him at our Masjid, he came over right after the 2005 RIS. Apparently, our community drag him a long here, so we can ask him more qs..
Sheikh Noor-ud deen: the Muslim Chinese Calligrapher- the man who comes after my dad who inspired with calligraphyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy...........al hamdoulilah one on one..lessons with him
Dr. Murad-people from southwest ont will kknown im refering to.
and thats all for now...im sure u guys have meet more cooler ppl that i have..so share!
.
your turn..

Re: which Cool people you have chilled with
I've met Imam Zaid Shakir through my Islam prof, who knew him through the Hartford community.
I met Sr. Ingrid Mattson when I organized a lecture by her at my school (before she was ISNA prez).
Dunno if he really counts, but I also met John Esposito when I organized a lecture by him.

well the strategically speaking, you have to approach the first one..then second one..then your immune system adapts to your besharamness then you are quite comfortable after that..
disclaimer; there is NO SHARAM when it comes to seeking knowledge.

It's more of feeling ashamed that you're asking them a STUPID question that you should have already known >.>" and then all the brothers standing around you will know you as the idiot one for the rest of the conference/lecture/event.

Haven't you attend elementary school where they drill this concept in your head? "if you have a quesiton its most likely that someone else has the same question, hence dont hesistate to ask questions". facts are facts, they've probably went through the same stage as yourself!

Could you elaborate on their biography a little? I have never heard of them before?

Re: which Cool people you have chilled with
mostly brother Magid although i hang more with his kids and wife because he's always traveling, and i hate to bother him much at the masjid (there's always someone else who seems to want to talk to him more). a few years ago we managed to bring him all the way to virginia tech (to talk about marriage, of course) and we kept him up 'til about 3am at our masjid i felt pretty bad about that. imam magid is great for the topic of marriage (watch out, because he will try and arrange something for you) but a less known fact is that he's even better for Seerah- he loooooves talking about the life of Muhammad (S) and he's like a veritable textbook; it's amazing to listen to and just wonder at his enthusiasm.
altaf husain? again, mostly hang with his kids and wife, but he's always up for discussion, which is nice for those times i have to call people frantically for advice/speakers. he's always cracking jokes- give him an audience and he won't stop until his time is up (with the jokes).
imam johari abdul-malik's cool; he can go forever! he's got jokes, too.
sheikha zainab alwani is one of the sweetest people i know. she was my qur'an teacher for a year, and that was my favorite year in all the year's i've had qur'an teachers. she's nothing but positive encouragement and she's so unassuming in her knowledge (but she knows a loooot). her husband is even sweeter, if that's possible.
i think the thing i love the most about truly knowledgeable people is that they never seem to use negative ideas/speech/manners to get their points across- very little sarcasm, always looking to the positive side of things, and constantly encouraging good in others. i've heard lots of information from laymen like myself but the reception is palpably different than that received from really impressive sources. i think knowledge is a trust, and i'm not just going to take it from any old joe (though i'll definitely hear them out and consider what they say). i don't think knowledge should be for the elite few, but when you have those who really maintain a high level of trust with less knowledgeable people, they deserve serious respect. there are lots of other knowledgeable people i respect, but the ones above are a few that i know personally.
