well you can look into the quote in a lot of depth.
it just points out the reality of our state - because in front of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, we are nothing. He is the greatest, we are merely His creation. we have no rank whatsoever in comparison to Him.
but it also points out the delusion that we all face; that we are something big, important, significant. our egos talk us into believing this. even an ounce of pride in one's heart can destroy your progression toward Allah.
so the science of tasawwuf is about understanding our reality; and developing that
self realisation - that of
nothingness. the state of most is that they have forgotton their reality - and so tasawwuf aims to remind them of that.
to explain the quote simply: you can't
make yourself into nothing - if you were nothing
to begin with.
