"Muslim girls should not go to university..."
Assalamu alaikum,
Recalling a time I was listening to a Muslim radio station where they were having a discussion with a lady over the phone.
I do not remember why she was a guest on the show, but the topic was on Muslim women and their roles. She (the guest on the phone), I remember was identified as a niqabi and a housewife (the two things I can recall).
One of her firm beliefs which she was airing over the phone confidently was that Muslim girls should NOT go to university. As shocking as it may sound, she said it, several times. She strongly upheld her view. She said up to college was fine, but after that, there is no point (her role is to serve her home). But men should go to university.
I was very shocked and saddened to know that such preposterous views that do nothing to progress Muslims, but drag us backwards, are there alive within our society today.

Re: "Muslim girls should not go to university..."
That's her view, and its its heavily supported with basis from quran and hadith, and If this lady was in london, then good for her, Muslim men shouldnt even attend universities that include such activities as pub-crawling, hazing, binge drinking etc.
Haraam shouldn't be encouraged...
Which includes calling a sisters views backwards.

Alhamdulillah, we were given a thing called common sense.
If you use it, places like that shouldn't be a problem, now, should they?

Insulting a sister in this way, when she is merely presenting an opinion which is hardly against Islam, calling it backwards is not something a brother should do.
Just because a view doesn't confirm to Western Ideals, doesn't make it backwards.

Common sense is subjective.
Is everyone had the same version of 'common sense'
Would we even be having this conversation?

Re: "Muslim girls should not go to university..."
So, pick up a book, read. There, you have knowledge without western bias.
We have the Internet, there's nothing in your textbooks that isn't on the web.
People need to stop thinking in one dimension.
Alternatives are everywhere, though a state university would be encouraged if 1, the environment was halal, and 2, if it wasn't a puppet for the larger capitalistic goals of the country.

Yeah you can get the same knowledge without ever attending uni, but where would that leave us economically? Every community needs professionals.
I think you should take your own advice and stop thinking in one dimension

In Islamic tradition, Did professionals need a piece of paper that said they paid to be taught by biased western philosophers who call themselves professors?
Muslims rely too much on western tradition, we need to create our own.
Degrees affecting Professions,
Cause, To define a societies work force, To better control the people.
Effect, Privatization of schools, from k- college senior.
Reason, As with race a classification of people based upon a new socio-economic class system, where a form of currency is earned through varying professions, utilizing the privatization of nearly everything in the world. Including Life, Air and Water.
An example of 3 dimensions, it can go even further.
Complex thought is subjective and is not limited to cause, effect and reason.

Brother, for my own edification, could you explain what ayat and hadith prevent a woman from attending University? (I assume you mean only women and not men) And do you mean that women should not be educated in general, or that they can but not by going to the university? Thanks.

Western Universities, not all universities,
And yes I meant men as well, for the reasons stated above.
(by above I mean my above posts)
