Default Eid Customs - So, what do you do/are you doing for Eid this year?

So, what are you all doing for Eid this year? How's it going in your city? What do you usually do? Let's discuss all the various ways Eid is celebrated in various communties and cultures.

For me, it was getting up a bit later than usual, getting into the appointed Eid clothes for the day, going to the masjid in time for the sermon after the first jamat, but in time for the second jamat. Keeping kids quiet a stray chore at the masjid here or there to help out. Joining in on the informal chant of praise for God and the Prophet (pbuh) while sitting inside and waiting for the second jamat to start (they had it up on a big poster on the wall, so i could follow along). Eid hugs afterward and throughout, seeing just about everyone I know at that place in the span of 5-10 minutes, and then out. (While keeping some kids with plastic toy swords from stabbing at the other kids riding the little rented train-ride that was going around the parking lot.)

Now, it's my grandmas for a bit of food and pictures (since everybody's all dressed up) and some video games snuck in against my little cousins and visiting brother-in-law. Then house jumping. My mom explained how we're all booked up today in two hour blocks. A get-together at one group of family-friends houses from noon till 2, another from 2-4, another from 4-6 and then our house with guests coming over from 7 till night. Reminds me I got rush home and do some last second cleaning.

Eidi (traditionally Pakistani money gift from elder to younger people) dispersal throughout the day.

In a nutshell:

Wake up mega-early, make the first jamat, pray, come home and my mom gives us all hugs [because she's cute like that], we eat the breakfast she preps [which is usually awesome], and then its either

1.Go to people's houses that live within an hour of us, come home, Eidie time, prep for guests, and have a dinner party.

2. Go to New Jersey, where we have family friends, and feel our insides burst from laughing all day and night.

or 3. New York, to family.

This year, its Number 1.

Default Re: Eid Customs - So, what do you do/are you doing for Eid this year?

It's mostly like this:

Wake up early in the morning (if you've slept that is) and greet your parents as if you've just got back from abroad after two years or something Two minutes later, my mother is screaming at the top of her lungs for everybody to get ready so we're not late. Eid prayers. There's always, always one or two of us who will be left behind. There's always someone late. After we've come back from prayers, my dad starts giving out Eid gifts (in cash) to the kids and helpers, and another non-cash gift for the wives (and they give him nothing in return!).

Then we drive in our separate cars to my grandparents' place, where the whole family meets. When I say the whole family, I mean direct uncles and aunts, their wives/husbands and children (only first cousins). The grandchildren, including myself and my siblings, would be 30 people in total. The younger ones get to meet very often. The older ones, like myself, don't meet often, so Eid is a time for us to meet the older cousins (males and females) and catch up basically. (In our family, we don't usually marry first cousins).

After having our breakfast together, we start receiving guests (second cousins and other family members). That's when we're separated. The men go to a separate majlis, and the women occupy the living room. After lunch, the grandchildren (younger ones) use the second floor to play and the rest of us (older ones) just hang around until it's evening time. Then it becomes our turn to visit other families. And that's when it gets boring. Your mouth is aching by the end of the day because of the cheek-to-cheek kisses you do. You can't stop if the other person hasn't stopped yet, and it's not like you really kiss the cheek. You just make the annoying sounds. (With men it's easier. They just do the nose-kiss, which is not really a kiss. They just make their noses touch. If you think that's weird, I don't care? )

Like this, so you don't freak out:

All the above is frequently interrupted by children ringing the outside gate bell for a "3eediya", symbolic amount of money the elders hand out to kids who come knocking on Eid. Just a custom.

After the compulsory visits, the cousins (older ones) usually hang out together. Either we go for dinner or a movie, or both. A few years back, we spent the evening and the day after at an uncle's farm. We rented a couple of scary movies (I didn't watch any) and drove all the way to al-Dhaid (farm-area). Some of the crazy cousins (males of course) will sometimes suggest sand-duning before sunset, or camping in the evening. We go by votes.

In any case, this year I missed out on all this.

Well I get up, get ready, Unlike some Jummah, I try to dress a bit more simple and modest for eid, so Just a thobe, Kufi, and Sweater, Nothing to fancy or intricate, then I go to the neighborhood masjid, pray fajr, read, converse, Eat, prepare for the eid prayer, pray, converse, leave and buy stuff, then I sleep...

Sleep glorious sleep mashallah!

I went to the mall and shopped. Well, after the prayer this morning, and me coming home falling asleep while watching Fairy Oddparents. I took the sisters to the mall where we intended to do good at macy's but all the crap on sale was crap. We ended up buying stuff from Torrid, my favorite store. Then we went to Friendlys for dinner. I got a sundae

I guess I'm the only one who sleeps in on Eid, since I don't go to Eid namaaz.
Then I get up and shower and get dressed (pretty, new clothes and all that) and then I hug my parents Eid Mubarak. And we go to one of my aunts' houses or we invite the whole family over to ours. We take turns hosting the Eid party, heh. Other people (not family) come over too but they do the house-hopping thing and don't stay for long. Umm... we eat lots.

And we get Eidi from all our dads and uncles. Hang out with my cousins basically. Watch a movie at home or go out later in the evening to either catch a movie there or hang out at the mall (just the kids). And to top it off, we go to Gerrard Street (Toronto's "Little India") to roam around and eat even more. Basically, we spend all our Eidi.

Chaand Raat is fun too.
