Re: Muslim opposite sex members become rude.
hrmm true, mayb thats why theres soo much corruption going on. Cuz people speak their mind a lil TOO freely? *cough* Ann Coulter *cough* So mayb if you start your article you should start with, "In my Opinion," and not state any facts cuz then you'd be stating an ARGUMENT wouldnt you? Using you're own intellect is different that having Credentials. A scholors opinion or a article will be better recognized than some random 21 year olds...you know what I mean? if you're going to simply express your intellect / thoughts / ideas / beliefs, then make sure its on a BLOG and I would love to read it

Re: Muslim opposite sex members become rude.
Regarding the original question, I think that when Muslims are rude to members of the opposite sex, it's because there is a lot of emphasis in the Muslim community on keeping up appearances. And that means if she or he is perceived as acting too friendly, people may spread gossip about them. That's one thing I have had a hard time with since converting (years ago)... it seems like if you want to rack up "Muslim street cred" you have to act a certain (sometimes not genuine) way when you are around other Muslims. I mean, I'll bet people who are rude to Muslim members of the opposite sex are NOT that way to their opposite sex, non-Muslim classmates/co-workers.

Re: Muslim opposite sex members become rude.
What annoyed me most in college was Muslim guys who wouldn't salam/look at/wave at girls when they're with their gang of Muslim brothers, but seemed to think they could come and talk to me when they were on their own, or when there were only non-Muslims around. Kind of like, 'oh my dudes aren't around now, so I'll talk to you.'
I have more respect for brothers who never talk to me in any situation, rather than these who behave one way with their friends and differently alone. If you aren't going to acknowledge sisters when your guy friends are around, please, don't bother to condescend to us when you're alone, just because you don't want to look like a loner.

Re: Muslim opposite sex members become rude.
Good thread.
Way too much effort is spent on "oh my god, that brother looked at me", "oh my god, he saw my leg", "oh my god i can't speak to him, you speak to him, no, no, wait maybe we can speak to him behind a curtain"
way too much effort, and it makes me irate so i don't put myself in these situations anymore.

Re: Muslim opposite sex members become rude.
I can't say I've encountered that.
Most of the brothers at uni just kinda ignore the girls. They all lower their gaze and all that, you know? I think my MSA's conservative like that.
But I met this Muslim guy outside of the MSA and he said how he doesn't know any Muslims on campus. I told him to hang out around the prayer room and say salaams to some of the brothers and he's sure to make friends. But he feels like the brothers aren't too nice. He said Muslim girls are nicer.

Re: Muslim opposite sex members become rude.
I hate when brothers, young and old, put on some religious holy act while in the Masjid which targets us sisters who are present but outside the Masjid their behavior is the polar opposite. They want to harass us about being outside the sisters room- yet they work, shop, go to school, and socialize in mixed gender environments. They want to harass us about how it's zina for us to be at the same table as them- yet they have non-Muslim wives and girlfriends. Such utter crap.
