Salaam Alikum.

Today, my college was hosting an activity where all clubs on campus were in one place and students can check them out, etc. I was hanging out with the MSA, and there was a gangsta student who came up and was asking questions about Islam and stuff like that. He seemed very interested and said he wanted to convert! He said that he was nervous because he's white and was wondering if it's unusual if there's a white convert, but the MSA pointed to me and were like "he's a white convert" (I corrected them and said "half-white"), but this seems very promising. He's going to come to our MSA meeting on Friday. I feel so

And to add to the situation, there was a white girl too who said that she was interested in Islam. She was asking questions and such, and she's coming to our meeting on Friday too.


It's pretty exciting.

It's pretty exciting.

Its not that uncommon for white people to become muslims. Ive met enough white muslims that its not a strange or bizzare sight.
I'm more concerned with the people who become muslims and then leave Islam due to lack of support network or because they burn themselves out by trying to adhere to an overly strict/harsh interpretation or whatever other reason.
My friend from high school had been studying Islam for 6 (SIX!) years and he just took shahada a couple months ago.
That cemented one thing in my mind: that this a big commitment and can take years of study or contemplation before going forward with it. Its not just some gimicky thing that people can accept in 5-10 minutes or a couple days. But then again there are some people like that too probably. God knows best.

No, it's just that there is a perception of white people having an extreme aversion and hatred of Islam.

I would recommend helping him (and her) out as much as you can. And be sure to remind them that the Islamic way is the middle way, so they won't go overboard. ^^;

Also, if they can get on the internet, how about letting them check out some good sites like The Modern Religion? It's very interesting.

yea the need for a good support network is very important, it seems like this is an issue in many communities unfortunately.

No. I was just excited that there are some people at my college who want to convert to Islam. I've never witnessed anyone take shahada before.

I'm really nervous because I'm the convert of the MSA group, so this new guy will be hanging around me alot and I need to make sure I represent Islam correctly.

Well, the student converted to Islam last night. He sent me a message on facebook saying that he went to the local masjid and recieted shahada. I'm going to meet up with him for Dhuhr to help him with salaat. I also gave him some links to get some Islamic supplies (Qu'ran, prayer rug, kufi, Sunnah books, etc)
