Default When breaking your fast..

isn't it Sunnah to first eat a date or drink water?
Growing up, I was taught that the first thing we are to eat at iftar time cannot touch fire,
meaning nothing cooked.
Hence the dates and water.

Am I wrong ?

It is sunnah.
You can open it with anything halal, but it is recommended to open it with a date.

Do we 'open fast' or 'break fast'? Open just sounds funny

It's not break your fast. When you break your fast, you invalidate it. That's why I call it opening your fast!

Yes, it's sunnah to open your fast with a date! I always open it with date and water and then do my Maghrib, and then eat.

Well, this is the problem I see with rice: you fast all day and don't drink anything. You eat rice, and it will absorb a lot of liquid that's in your body. You will get severely dehydrated.

That's my thinking.

loool ok! open my fast!
i know the dates and water are Sunnah,
my question is.......
isnt it wrong to open my fast with something which has been cooked?
'cause doesnt it say in some hadith that we cant open our fast with something that has been under a fire?

I was brought up like that too.

Surely it has some basis?

I just know we never opened our fast with anything cooked.

Would be nice to see some daleel.

Try to stick with the Sunnah though of doing it with a date. There's also some scientific evidence I believe to back up the benefits of doing it with a date.

I was raised to believe that "sugar" is the exact reason why it is recommended to break one's fast with dates.

Someone could verify this better, but from what I learned, after a long day of fasting, one's sugar level goes down. So before attacking the body with heavy food, one should attempt to raise the sugar level by eating dates.

It's not HARAM to open your fast with something cooked, if that's what you mean. Although common sense dictates that it's probably not the best idea to hit your hungry body with a dollop of spicy chickpeas right off.
