So, you know that certain very isolated tribes won't wear clothing. They walk around next to naked all the time, with ladies only wearing grass skirts if anything at all. Now, if you walked into their tribe dressed all Islamically, you would get TONS of attention (a lot of it negative). Your dress would definitely be "flashy" and so forth. That would seem to be the opposite of modesty right?

So, if you were an aid worker in those places, should you "go tribal"

I don't see how thats a relevant comparison. The concept of modesty is really based on one's intent. If you're wearing hijab with designer brands and sparkly cloth, then you're intention is to attract attention, which is the opposite.

Whether its objectively "modest" isn't the issue.

I did respond. I said I don't think I'm allowed to interpret those words. How can I interpret a translation? Maybe it's phrased differently in the original and it really says that covering is in order to be modest. I dunno.

No, i didnt. You gave me the information on Friday and then I had to hunt for the numbers (which I havent yet been able to) and then I was doing a bbq. Too bad you missed it. The chicken was really good.

Why dont you just PM me the numbers? It'd be easier for me... seeing that YOU were going to get the opinion of your sheikhs and somehow I have to call them up and ask, and that you spend so much time on Islamica but cant live up to your own post

As to what fabrics, colors, or styles of clothing you use, that is up to you, as long as you have satisfied these basic requirements. It is recommended to wear a jilbab, or over-garment. However, a long, loose-fitting tunic with a long skirt also satisfies the requirement for covering the body modestly. If you look at styles in the Muslim world, you will see everything from an Arab abaya to an Iranian chador, from Afghani burqas to Malaysian skirt and tunic sets, from smart business suits to Indo-Pak shalvar qamiz. You will see a diversity of fabrics, colors, and designs. All of these can fulfill the basic requirement of hijab, which is the modest covering of the hair and body. As far as color is concerned, a lot of that is cultural. While wearing black in Iran or the Arab world is customary, in Africa and Southeast Asia it is customary to be colorful and this is not inappropriate. Diversity is one of the strengths of the Umma. I don't think it's appropriate for people to tell you that if you wear a black hijab, your hijab is good, but if you wear a hijab with flowers on it, your hijab is bad. As long as you are modest and have not dressed in a way that will attract attention to yourself, you are fine. You can tell if you are wearing something that is showy or flashy. What colors you wear are entirely up to you. Just use discretion.

sumiyia snipped that part not because she disagrees with it, but because she knows zeyneddine will ignore everything before that last line and not take it into context of the whole opinion. she feels that last line, when taken into context, states that when in a society/culture that already dresses in bright colors, a sister will recognize that she can still dress modestly and "blend in" by wearing those same bright colors. something that would "attract attention" in such a culture would be something out of the norm, i.e. black or dull or muted colors.
