social networking site results in teen's death

Plan to kidnap Adnan made on Orkut? | Killed by friends
Geetika Pokhriyal / CNN-INDIA
Published on Tuesday , August 21, 2007 at 08:14 in Nation section
New Delhi: Adnan Patrawala the 16-year-old son, of a businessman, who was abducted on Saturday night, was found dead in Navi Bombay on Monday.
Police investigations suggest that the plan to kidnap Adnan was hatched on Orkut, a social networking website.
While the police have arrested three of Adnan's friends - Sujith Nair (28), Ayush Bhat (19) and Himmesh Ambavat (18) – for murdering him, an Orkut profile under the name of Angel D in under police scanner.
Police sources say the trio, whom Adnan had met through Orkut, had promised to introduce him to Angel.
But the question is who is Angel? As the hundreds of messages on Adnan's scrapbook suggest, Angel's profile could well be fake.
What’s startling is that even as news of the murder came, someone was still operating Adnan’s profile. Names and messages from Angel's profile were deleted after the media flashed the news of the 16-year-old’s death.
In the meanwhile, someone has also been tampering with Adnan's Orkut profile. His picture, album, videos and all messages before August 20 have been deleted.
But Adnan case is not an isolated one. Cybercrime has been on the rise over the last couple of years.
According to statistics available with Delhi Police, a total of 17 cases related to hacking, obscenity, e-commerce fraud, Internet-related crimes were registered last year. This was against 12 cases registered in 2005, indicating a 42 per cent rise.
Of late there has been a demand for a ban on Orkut, citing use of the website for sex trade and other dubious activities. While critics of the networking site say it poses a clear danger, there is also an upside to it.
On May 14, 24-year-old Manish Thakur, a Naval officer based in Goa, shot his girlfriend in Andheri. Mumbai police say Thakur's profile on Orkut helped them zero in on him.
And now the same website that might have played a part in Adnan's death has now become a platform for paying condolence, with over hundred already offering their tributes to the 16-year-old.

Re: social networking site results in teen's death
i think the reason why the site is popular with fobs, is because of marketing. i think the site, which is owned by google, probably does heavy advertising in India and pak, must in the same way that hi5, which is owned by yahoo does.
how many people in india will you find in facebook or freindster? very little if any, because they dont advertise thier website in those countries, the way orkut or hi5 does. in fact i never heard of orkut till only a few weeks ago.
btw i hate social networking sites. i think they are dumb and stupid and are used nothing more than platforms for online popular contests. its very childlish and something out of high school.

Re: social networking site results in teen's death
Am I the only one disturbed by the fact that the kid was a Muslim and the murderers were Hindus?
I hate to be the one to point out such clear differences based on religion, but with all the threads about the miserable state of Muslims in India, I can't help but wonder.

salaams to all
i was going to point that out as well.
we should not take non-muslims as our friends and even when it comes to muslims- choose those that are a good influence on us- a person is known by the company he keeps.
i know most of u live in USA,UK,Canada,Aus and you guys work or study with mostly non-mulims. that does not mean we have to take them as friends.
im not saying we should ignore them or be unfriendly- then how would we be able to invite them to islam.
just dont take them as bosom buddies or disclose your secrets to them.
jazakallah

I know many non-Muslims who have no plans to convert and are very happy where they are, yet they are better than many Muslims I know. Of course, I would personally be more comfortable around Muslims who share my core beliefs and values, but I think it is very Islamic to appreciate the goodness in others as well, regardless of their beliefs.
But the case of this kid is slightly different, as he lives in a country that seems to be hostile to Muslims in general. And it's surprising, but relieving at the same time, that all his "friends" who murdered him were non-Muslims. I know from first-hand experience that many Indian Muslims are sort of "in limbo". Like my older brother said once, "Can they not make up their mind? I don't know how to judge them. They are neither Hindus for me to excuse their attitudes, nor are they very Islamic for me to remember our brotherhood." This kid seems like he comes from that sort of a family; Muslim by name. But then again, alhamdulillah the killers were non-Muslims! It would have been such a grave, and unforgivable sin for a Muslim to kill another.

Re: social networking site results in teen's death
the killers may have been Hindu, but you cant classify this as a hate crime. He wasnt killed because he was Muslim, he was killed because his parents wouldnt pay up the half a million dollar ransom that they were asking for. He is the son of a rich businessman in India, a builder in fact, and this had more to do with greed than anything to do with religion or hate. After all, he was targeted because of his family wealth, not becuase of his religion. if he was a dirt poor Muslim, they would have moved on to someone else.
