BBC ‘censored Christian party broadcast’
Andrew Norfolk
The BBC is facing a High Court challenge over its decision to censor a party political broadcast in the run-up to Thursday’s local elections.

A Christian party has begun legal action after the corporation insisted on changes to a short film in which the party voiced opposition to the building of Europe’s biggest mosque next to the site of the 2012 Olympics.

Tablighi Jamaat, the Islamic missionary group behind the £75 million Abbey Mills mosque, opposes inter-faith dialogue and preaches that non-Muslims are an evil and corrupting influence. One of its British advocates has said that it aims to rescue Muslims from the culture and civilisation of Jews and Christians by creating “such hatred for their ways as human beings have for urine and excreta”.

The Christian Choice election broadcast would have described Tablighi Jamaat as “a separatist Islamic group” before welcoming that some “moderate Muslims” were opposed to the mosque complex.

Alan Craig, the party’s candidate in the London mayoral election, also on Thursday, said that he was forced to change the wording at the insistence of lawyers at the BBC and ITV, which will also feature in the court action.

The BBC refused to accept “separatist” — the corporation asked for “controversial” instead — and barred the use of “moderate Muslims” because the phrase implied that Tablighi Jamaat was less than moderate.

ITV went a step farther, demanding that the adjective “controversial” be used merely to describe the planned mosque and not the group itself.

Mr Craig, a councillor in Newham, East London, the site of the proposed development, said that his party reluctantly agreed to a watered-down version that was acceptable to the BBC and ITV. The amended five-minute film was aired in the London area on Wednesday last week, but papers will be lodged in the High Court today to seek a judicial review of the broadcasters’ actions. If the action succeeds, Mr Craig hopes that the televison companies will be forced to screen his original film before voters go to the polls.

“This was a politically correct attempt to close down reasoned discussion and debate. It’s a matter of freedom of speech and democracy,” he said. “People rub along fairly well together in the East End of London, all different communities, faiths, colours and nationalities, but Tablighi Jamaat have been antagonistic separatists since they were founded.”

Tablighi Jamaat was founded in India in 1926. It is closely linked to the ultra-conservative Deobandi school of thought, which gave birth to the Taleban in Afghanistan and is becoming increasingly powerful in Britain.

Its leaders claim millions of adherents worldwide and insist that the secretive Sunni group — which has traditionally shunned all publicity — is peaceful and apolitical. A spokesman for the Abbey Mills project said last night that Tablighi Jamaat was an open organisation that preached neither separatism nor extremism. International intelligence agencies, however, say that the revivalist movement has acted, in some instances, as a gateway to terrorism. Adherents have been linked to atrocities, including the 7/7 suicide attack on London.

More than 2,500 Muslims have signed a petition against the project and its opponents include Irfan alAlawi, the international director of the Centre for Islamic Pluralism, and Dr Ghayasuddin Siddiqui, who co-founded the Muslim Parliament of Britain.

Taj Hargey, chairman of the Muslim Educational Centre of Oxford, said that the proposed mosque would become “the headquarters for radical . . . sectarianism in the UK”. He accused Tablighi Jamaat of preaching “a virulent, intolerant version of Islam”.

Neither the BBC nor ITV would discuss its specific concerns.

Faisal Iqbal, 25, a member of Tablighi Jamaat who is also an IT consultant and part of the Abbey Mills project team, said last night that it was wrong to suggest that the movement had a separatist agenda. “When comments by some Tablighi Jamaat supporters are read out of context they may seem to be separatist, but what we’re trying to discuss is distancing ourselves from beliefs which move us away from belief in God and which take us into things we consider to be a sin,” he said. “Stopping all interaction with people who are non-Muslims has never been a doctrine of Islam. Our religion says we must treat our neighbours with the highest regard, regardless of their religion.”

The TJ being described in the article is not the one I know. I think this is a bit of smear campaign on the part of this Christian political party.

Also, why are they basing their campaign on hating Muslims? Surely this would only appeal to far-right voters. The average Brit is concerned about crime, housing and jobs, not some crusade against some Muslim group who spend half their day in the mosque.

You phail, Christian Choice political party!

Islamic missionary group links alleged plotters

By Sean O’Neill and Roger Boyes
CENTRAL figures in the alleged terrorism cell that the police say was planning to blow up transatlantic airliners are linked through an ultra-orthodox religious movement.
Friends and family of suspects arrested last week have said that they were followers of Tablighi Jamaat, an Islamic missionary group that rejects secular society and advocates strict adherence to an Islamic dress code and lifestyle. Western security agencies have become increasingly concerned that a movement once viewed as pious and apolitical may have become a fertile recruiting ground for terrorists.

Assad Sarwar, 26, who was arrested in High Wycombe last week, is said by his family to have become a Tabligh follower after dropping out of university. His brother, Amjad, said: “He was at Tablighi Jamaat, which is a sect in Islam which encourages the youth to grow beards, pray five times a day and, how the Prophet lived on a daily basis, that’s how you should run your life. He got actively involved in that and thought that religion is more important than study.”

Friends of Waheed Zaman, 22, who was arrested in Walthamstow, East London, said that he was also a Tabligh follower. The group’s preachers regularly visited the mosque where most of those arrested in East London worshipped.

The European headquarters of Tablighi Jamaaat, which was formed in India in 1927, are in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, where it has a 4,000-capacity mosque. Mohammed Sidique Khan, the ringleader of the 7/7 suicide bombers, lived in Dewsbury and attended the Tabligh mosque. He also went with another bomber, Shehzad Tanweer, to a mosque in Leeds controlled by the movement.

Other known al-Qaeda operatives have previously been Tabligh disciples, including six men from Lackawanna, New York, who admitted attending religious training in Pakistan before going to an al-Qaeda camp over the Afghan border.

The Tabligh movement denies any involvement with terrorism and community leaders maintain that it is “totally apolitical, almost allergic to any discussion of politics”. It is not an affiliate of the Muslim Council of Britain, but several of the mosques it controls do belong to the organisation.

Intelligence agencies in the United States, France and Germany are monitoring the movements of Tabligh’s band of travelling preachers. Two were recently expelled from Bavaria. German sources said that it was not being treated as a terrorist movement but that there were concerns about Tabligh followers who became attracted to violent jihad groups.

FBI monitors Islamic group for terror ties
Secret memo suggests U.S. group could recruit terrorists
By Lisa Myers & the NBC investigative unit
updated 7:33 p.m. ET Jan. 18, 2005
The FBI and the Pentagon are keeping a close eye on an Islamic missionary group with thousands of U.S. members. In a secret intelligence document obtained by NBC News, terrorism analysts say members of the evangelical movement are ideal recruits for terrorist organizations inside the United States.

On Dec. 13, in Queens, New York, members of a conservative Islamic missionary group known as Tablighi Jamaat brought sleeping bags to their mosque to spend the night discussing religion.

Now, NBC News has obtained a secret government memo which says U.S. anti-terror officials believe radical extremists have been infiltrating this otherwise peaceful Islamic movement and are using Tablighi's U.S. organization "as cover... to network with other extremists in the U.S."

"If al-Qaida needed a fresh set of bodies in order to pull an operation, one of the places that they would go to for that fresh set of bodies would be Tablighi Jamaat, whether it's in the United States or not," says former FBI agent Steve Denny, who has investigated members of Tablighi.

Tablighi preaches a return to fundamental Islamic values and has major mosques in at least 10 states, with as many as 50,000 U.S. members.

Recent pilgrimages in Bangladesh and Pakistan attracted millions. Experts say they were fertile ground for al-Qaida recruiters.

The memo, written in April by the Defense Intelligence Agency, claims some Tablighi members in the U.S. "have the capability to conduct a terrorist attack in the U.S.," though there's no evidence of planning.

The document also says seven Tablighi leaders in the U.S. are under investigation and claims a Tablighi official at a major Midwestern mosque "has associations with several al-Qaida supporters" and may be recruiting "converts for nefarious purposes."

The imam in Queens says the FBI questioned him. He insists that radicals who espouse violence aren't even allowed at his mosque.

"We stop them," says Imam Zia Hafez Paracha. "We don't even let them come."

"We don’t have any numbers as to how successful al-Qaida or other militant groups have been, but they are present and they do see this as opportunity to recruit youth to their cause," says Vali Nasr, an Islamic expert and professor of Middle East politics at the Naval Postgraduate School.

Tablighi does not endorse terrorism, but investigators allege some known militants have Tablighi ties:

So-called American Taliban John Walker Lindh was radicalized at a Tablighi-affiliated mosque in California.
Iyman Faris, who plotted to destroy the Brooklyn Bridge, posed as a Tablighi missionary to get into the U.S.
The Pentagon denies spying on the group and says it merely analyzed intelligence collected by the FBI about possible threats posed by terrorists who "exploited this legitimate religious organization."

Right. As usual racistroberto misses the point. For somebody who lives in American he seems to spend an awful lot of time obsessing about the UK...pity he still doesn't know anything about it's society let alone it's legal or constitutional framework...
