Re: On the Web, talk is cheap, and nasty
I wasn't refering to anyone actually.
Yahoo! news used to allow user comments after news articles. The kinds of horrible things people would post is what I was thinking about when I made my posts. My comments were entirely general, and should be be contrued as being directed towards any person in particular, though in the past Islamica has had some pretty colorful posters who were banned becuase of their outrageous behavior.
Since people can't read body language, and have to judge entirely by the written word, people should be more careful in their choice of words to avoid misunderstandings. Of course, when you read a book, there is no body language either, but ones imagination is pretty good at suplying the body image appropriate to the language and context, which is why books are really very enjoyable.

Yeh, it's sad... it's kind of like the equivalent of writing graffiti on the inside of bathroom stalls. One would hope that just because there's no accountability, one wouldn't suddenly devolve to the lowest common denominator. It kind of bolsters the argument of those political philosophers who have a dower view of the nature of human kind.

Re: On the Web, talk is cheap, and nasty
Vari, your comments might work with some people but not with everyone, since a lot of people here know others in real life, so there isn't necessarily complete anonymity that one might have when writing some stuff inside a public bathroom stall.
I have about maybe 50 Islamicans on my Facebook list - and they can all see my contact information and pics of my parents and family etc. Some of my siblings are on Islamica, and so are family friends and community members. There's probably about 20 Islamicans that know me in real life.
There's no way I could get away with writing some BS online that I would never say in real life.

I wasn't thinking on Islamica so much. There are some people here who are just trolls, but Islamica seems like a pretty good place. I was thinking more of places like Yahoo Answers.... I kind of happened on it a while ago, and the things people say are completely inane. Also places like Youtube in the comments section.

Yeah, it ... varies ... with different boards and message forums.
I could easily go on some random board and flame a whole load of people and no one would ever know it was me. But then again I could probably make like Travolta and Cage and do the same thing in real life and no one would know it was really me, either.

Yeh but would you though? Would you post trashy stuff just because you could and no one would know it was you?
It's pretty safe to say that no Islamican knows me, or would have any connection to me, but I definitely don't feel the need to write filthy, nasty things at people because I can get away with it with my reputation intact. I don't think most people here do. I guess I don't even see why there would be an impetus to do it.

Some people use the net to indulge their racism and have an audience for that, like your article mentioned. But its also a place where people indulge in vanity, sexual harrassment, forms of bigotry other than racism, and just general childishness like name-calling and so on. Some people go to even freakier lengths and become stalkers and stuff like that. I dont know if Islamica has that type on it, but it wouldnt surprise me

I'm sure it is, but seeing as islamica is the only forum I visit, maybe thats why it reminded me of it.

Re: On the Web, talk is cheap, and nasty
i think posting hateful things online that you would otherwise never say in person is simply an indication of weak character/cowardice/immaturity.
which isnt to say i think the lowest of the low reside on the internet. as the article states, i think the web brings it out of people; it gives us an outlet we've never had before to express ourselves. and what we find is that actually, we can be terrible people, often. i say "we" because probably, each of us has posted something in our lifetimes which we in retrospect would not have said (with exceptions). but that's humanity, right? i bet a little bit of mob mentality plays into stuff like comment sections on youtube, also. it's easier to do it because other people do it all the time.
