LUDWIGSHAFEN, Germany (Feb. 7) - Kamil Kaplan faced a horrifying decision as flames engulfed his apartment building: Does he drop his 9-month-old nephew four stories to a policeman or hope the baby boy survives the suffocating smoke?Kaplan chose to drop the boy, Onur Celar -- a dramatic life-saving moment captured in photographs seen around the world.

"It was terrible. I just had to make a decision," he told CNN.

The smoke and flames were becoming unbearable. It was now or never.

"I took the child from my sister, the mother," he said. "She and the father were screaming: 'Don't do it! Don't do it!' But I didn't listen."

He added, "I looked into the eyes of the policeman below, and I knew I could trust him."

The police officer caught the baby, and he is now doing well. But the parents are still grieving because Onur's 2-year-old brother, Ilyas, was killed in the blaze -- one of nine people to have died in the fire that has shocked this German town. Five of the dead are children, officials said.

Onur's father was also badly injured in the fire and remains hospitalized.

The cause of the fire is not immediately known, but investigators have not ruled out arson. Wednesday, investigators were able to enter the burned out building for the first time since Sunday's fire.

The four-story apartment building in Ludwigshafen is home to several Turkish immigrant families, and was the target of a Molotov cocktail attack two years ago, police said.

The building went up in flames while revelers were celebrating Carnival. The blaze quickly spread, eating up a wooden staircase that soon gave way.

Kaplan said he and his daughter were rescued by firefighters at the last second. He's just glad the policeman caught his nephew -- otherwise the family would be dealing with even more tragedy.

"If the cop wouldn't have been standing down there," he said. "I would have just taken the boy and jumped down with him in my arms to save him."

Ludwigshafen is a port city on the west bank of the Rhine River. It is noted for its large chemical industry and is a gateway to the wine-growing region of the Rhine.

I was wondering-- why don't they, as in all fire departments, create a flat bed truck kinda with a material that can catch falls from high stories?

Because they were the racist germans -nazis-, who fired up the turkish apartment.

Somebody whos saved had told that he was being threatened by an unknown call a few days ago, as: "you will be burnt, lowdown turks."

Also the word of "hate" in germanian language was written on the wall next to this apartment.

Sad but true.. Turks are living in Germany under pressure.

This story always gives me a shiver down my spine..

I hurd on the radio yesterday the Uncle who threw the baby down lost his wife and two children in the fire but that may be wrong coz it doesn't say that in this article.. but if that is true, that would be sooo sad..

Because its easier, more efficient, and safer to use something that's very mobile, something that can be moved extremely quickly should the falling individual be shifted this way or that due to winds or other obstructions - ergo, you see fire departments do have over-sized, circular beds that look kinda like trampolines ... they get about five or six firemen, or more to hold it in order to catch the falling individual and they can move faster than any truck to compensate for lateral movement during the fall.

And all that is if they don't get the ladders there first.

GELSENKIRCHEN (A.A) - 16.02.2008 - Seven Turks were wounded in a fire that took place in a building on Friday night in German North Rhine-Westphalia state's Gelsenkirchen city.
Police sources indicated that seven Turks, including five children, were taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is not known yet.

1 of 4 Islamic preachers read prayers through loudspeakers as relatives of the victims wailed behind nine coffins draped with red-and-white Turkish flags and strewn with red roses at a cemetery in the southern city of Gaziantep. About 2,000 people attended the burial.

German authorities were still investigating the blaze, which killed five children and four adults on February 3 in the southwest German city of Ludwigshafen. Two Turkish families lived in the building and all the victims were Turkish citizens. Their bodies were flown to Gaziantep Sunday.

German police say there is no evidence to back up rumors that the fire was a racially motivated attack. Neo-Nazi graffiti "HASS" (hate) near the door of a Turkish cultural center in the same building was suspended to be related.
