Honest question to the brothers and sisters who may be a lot more internationally traveled than myself. As someone who has spent basically all his life in the States I honestly have to ask if this whole honor killings/forced marriage to a total stranger business is actually for real. I mean part of me honestly doesn't believe it actually exists

If it actually does exist why aren't the vast number of Islamic groups like Hizb ut Tahrir, Islamic Party of Britain, and Anjum Chaudary's crew acting out against this. I understand a lot of them are fighting for the rights of Muslims in Britian, but doesn't that include eliminating the munafiq acts within our Ummah. It greatly disturbs me that so many Imams and Sheikhs will speak out against becoming Westernised but won't tackle this issue.

The girl's marriage last April was not recognised by the Home Office but was approved by the Islamic Sharia Council in Britain.

That's what I was thinking. And about the last part of my post I was kind of ranting, but theres gotta some sadistic way of sending these people a message, something out of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre or something. Because we all know educating them won't work. Or we could just send them back to the subcontinent and enslave them. I think that's the most economically efficient idea.

Yes it does happen. All these families are so secluded and socialise completely into the extended family so their reputation is the prime thing they care about. Their reputation is what will prove to them and everyone else that they lived a great and moral life. Unfortunately the treasure hunt for reputation is pointless and when lives are made unbearably difficult, it's not nice to think it's all for a pointless cause.

It says she was tricked into it. so she did consent to the marriage and only found out when it was too late. Or are you referring to the mentally disabled guy?

I'd agree with what sak said apart from the very last paragraph; it is by no means simply a subcontinental phenomenon - remember the Kurdish girl who was murdered by her family? The reason the Indian/Pakistani communities have more exposure is because they make up the greater percentage of Muslims in the UK.

But yes, it is due to warped cultural perceptions rather than anything else.

edit: the most worrying thing to me is the fact that it's actually 3rd and 4th generation descendants of immigrants who have imbibed these attitudes and are acting on them; doesnt give one much hope that it will ever end.

It happens, but it's not at all common or accepted in society. I can point to headlines about a million f'd up things happening every single day in the US. To say that this stuff happens because that's how Americans are would be completely stupid.

I read some of the reader comments below the story and it's clear to see that a lot of people associate this kind of behaviour, and abuse of women in general with Islam. Even if we account for idiot bigots commenting, it still paints an awful picture of Islam.

We need to distance ourselves from these cruel sadistic acts, and appropriate punishments handed out, so that not only can people not associate this kind of thing with Islam, but that's its clear that the Muslim community doesn't tolerate this kind of thing even from amongst their own.

I think I could show you far more examples of this happening in certain non-muslim communities, so unless somebody is saying that this is enjoined by islam or practiced widely by muslims far more so than other communities I fail to see the relevance of 'Family of teen *muslim* invited...'
