36 Egyptian security injured at border

At least 36 Egyptian security personnel have been hospitalized, including some in critical condition, due to incidents with Palestinians on the breached border with Gaza, Egypt's foreign minister said Saturday.

Ahmed Aboul Gheit told reporters following a meeting with the Egyptian president and several cabinet ministers that between 10 and 12 riot police and 26 border guards, including two senior officers, were all in the hospital.

He said some were in danger of losing their lives due to "actions by Palestinian elements" over the past two days.

"These provocations cause us concern and our Palestinian brothers should note that the Egyptian decision to host them and ease their suffering should not result in threats to the lives of our sons in the Egyptian forces," he said.

Ah ok. I was just wondering if it was similar to the situation with the Pakistan-Afghanistan border - although technically they're two different countries, and the Pakistani government expresses disatisfaction with the number of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, there is practically speaking no real border to speak of, and the people either side of the border don't really recognise each other as being materially different from one another.

From what you're describing it seems that there is a more distinct identity between Egyptians and Palestinians.

Egyptians and Palestinians are separate people with their own national identities. Theres a myth created by the Israelis that Palestinians from Gaza are really just Egyptians and Bedouins and Palestinians from the West Bank are Jordanians.

In Rafah there are some families that are divided with some members on the Palestinian side and some in Egypt, but those families are basically Egyptians who couldnt get out of Gaza after the 1967 war or didnt have the appropriate papers or whatever. There was a period of a couple of decades when Gaza was an Egyptian protectorate and it was basically a tariff-free trade zone for Egyptians so alot of people went there to make money and others went there to get involved in cross-border warfare with the Israelis

No. The Israeli's have wanted to get rid of Gaza for decades

No. The Egyptians don't want Gaza as the Palestinians will continue their attacks from territory for which Egypt is responsible

No. Only 'certain' Egyptians eg Copts favour the distinct identity idea. It only exists because people in the middle east tend to use geographically linked 'surnames' eg al-gazawi. I have a friend who's family migrated from Gaza a few centuries ago. There is no cultural or racial distinction between her and the other Egyptians

Gazans and other Palestinians are culturally distinct from Egyptians and also have a different dialect and national identity. Ethnicity is a hodge-podge in Egypt and the Levant, but there too the groups are distinct.

Zionists past and present propagated a certain idea that Arabs in Palestine were just extensions of other Arab groups and could therefore be expelled from Palestine and absorbed by their Arab "countrymen". The myth is currently used as a way to deny the status of the Palestinians as a distinct people and therefore their rights as a nation.
