Turkey: Fatwa allows Muslims to pray just three times a day

Ankara, 10 Oct. (AKI) - Turkish Muslims will be allowed to pray only three times a day from Wednesday instead of the usual five - without fear of committing a sin.

A member of the scientific council of Istanbul University, Muhammad Nour Dughan, has issued a controversial fatwa or religious edict cutting Islamic prayer requirements from five to three times a day.

The move has provoked widespread debate as well as opposition from orthodox imams or Muslim clerics.

Sharia law allows for the possibility of praying three times a day in case of sickness or travel.

The fatwa extends this option allowing Muslims to pray three times a day, especially when they are heavily committed with work or personal issues.

The Turkish debate echoes a similar one that has already taken place in Egypt where the fatwa has also drawn support.

Jamal al-Banna, brother of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hasan al-Banna, endorsed the Turkish move.

"Merging prayers has become a modern necessity," he told the al-Arabiya website. "In most cases, people do not always perform the five prayers on time due to the pressures of modern life."

Al-Banna is often criticised for his modern interpretation of Islamic rules. He said the Prophet Mohammad himself had given followers this option that could be applied when prayers cannot be carried out in a given time.

A member of Egypt's Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Sheikh Youssef al-Badri, rejected the argument saying it was unacceptable to merge prayers unless it was due to travel, illness, rain or pilgrimage.

You are telling it wrong.

This is combining the two prayers. Not praying 3 times instead of 5.
"Praying Zohr and Asr together", or "Maghrib and Isha together" is another example of Namaz, which the prophet (S.A.W.) was doing many times, simply and willingly and purposely without any extraordinary circumstances such as rain or travelling or war, or Hajj etc.

And doing it is allowed when there's necessary; not always.

You have to read about it.

Knowledge is good.

That's what the shia do, routinely.

yea, nabeyuna Muhammad [saws] did do it sometimes but as we can all see by his practice as well as by that of his companions, its still five regular prayers at five distinct times.

We beleive that the Quran is Gods revalation to the world. In the Quran its made quite clear that people should pray five times a day as a way of keeping mindful.

Once upon a time actually, the commandment was for 50 [fifty] prayers a day.

God, in His infinite wisdom, lowered the requirement to five.

The ahadith I have read on the subject say that at the time of his Meraj, the Prophet met God and spoke with Him about the prayers. God initially required 99 prayers a day, and as the Prophet was returning from Heaven he met Musa Nabi (a.s.) who told him he must lower the requirement because his people would never be able to pray so many times, and so the Prophet returned and had it lowered. Musa Nabi again sent the Prophet back and this continued several times until finally the Prophet returned with only five prayers, and at this time Musa Nabi suggested he try to have it lowered to only one a day and the Prophet exclaimed that he was too embarrassed to face his Lord and make such a request, so he returned with the requirement that we pray five times.

Yea bro, ditto .. but I'm pretty sure the initial requirement was 50.

And then Prophet Muhammad kept going back and forth at the request of Prophet Musa, and it kept lowering by five until, as you said ... what happened in the end happened.

And Allah knows best.

I've heard about that. I think someone posted a thread about that in this forum a while ago.
