A British-born Muslim student, described at his trial as a “wannabe suicide bomber", was jailed for eight years after being convicted of promoting Islamist extremism on the Internet.
Mohammed Atif Siddique, 21, from Alva, central Scotland, was found with documents on weapons and bomb-making on a laptop computer as he was about to board a flight to Pakistan in April last year.
Sentencing him at the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday, judge Colin Carloway said he did not have the material because of “some innocent curiosity".
“These files are in English and contain terrorist propaganda particularly emanating from Al-Qaeda, glorifying terrorism — especially suicide bombing — designed to encourage people to commit such acts of terrorism and promote the recruitment of English-speaking, mainly British nationals, to the cause of jihad (holy war),” he added.
Siddique was convicted of a string of charges under the Terrorism Act 2000 at the same court last month after a trial lasting nearly four weeks.
During the proceedings, prosecutor Brian McConnachie described him as a “wannabe suicide bomber".
The CDs and videos on weapons use, guerilla tactics and bomb making were said to be a “call to arms for Muslims".
Siddique was also accused of setting up websites with links to extremist publications showing how to use weapons and make bombs, and distributing extremist publications via links on a website.
He was further accused of causing a breach of the peace at a Glasgow college by threatening to become a suicide bomber and blow up the city, as well as showing images of suicide bombers and beheadings.
