Empire State Green for Eid.
Empire State Building to go green for Muslim holiday
1 day ago
NEW YORK (AFP) — New York's iconic Empire State Building is to be lit up green from Friday in honor of the Muslim holiday of Eid, the biggest festival in the Muslim calendar marking the end of Ramadan, officials said.
"This is the first time that the Empire State Building will be illuminated for Eid, and the lighting will become an annual event in the same tradition of the yearly lightings for Christmas and Hannukah," according to a statement.
Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month, is expected to be celebrated in New York from Friday, depending on when the new moon is sighted, and the city's tallest skyscraper will remain green until Sunday.
Built in the early 1930s, the 443-meter-tall (1,454-feet-tall) Empire State Building was first lit up with colored lighting in 1976, when red, white and blue lights were used to mark the American Bicentennial.
An estimated seven million Muslims live in the United States.

Green is the turban colour the family of the prophet wear, only his descendants and those who have completed hajj may wear it.

Uh, no.
Hijabihoodlum, its just commonly assumed by the West that Islam's color is green. There's nothing substantial on that though, it's just one of their many misconceptions and stereotypes.

Do Muslim countries carry out similar things to mark Christmas and if so what?

That's irrelevant - USA isn't a Christian country.

No, but the USA isn't a Christian country its secular and does things for Most Major faiths, the fact they are doing this is fantastic because Eid Al-Fitr isn't recognised as as a holiday in the USA.

We're a Muslim country. We're not secular ... err .. yeah whatever. What I meant is that, we're not obliged to celebrate Christmas, Diwali, Onum and whatnot. But we do. And people of these faiths do get days off. Malls and public places set up Christmas trees and host hymn-singing bands, too.
I don't think you'll find that reciprocated by any Christian country. Secular doesn't count, ok?

I'm not exactly sure about that, Aryan.
I remember coming across several hadiths (of which I was able to find one) describing the Prophet's (sAaw) clothing, and the turban is usually said to be black. (Sometimes white).
In fact, if you look at the scholars of the Shia madhhab, you'll find that those who claim to be asyaad (descendants of the Prophet) wear only black turbans.
Quote:
Sahih Muslim, Book 007, Number 3149:
Ja'far bin 'Amr bin Huraith reported his father as saying: As if I am seeing Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) on the pulpit with a black turban on his head, and its two ends hanging between his shoulders.
|
I heard that the Prophet's (sAaw) favourite colour was green. But there's nothing to prove this, I think.
