I remember coming across several hadiths (of which I was able to find one) describing the Prophet's (sAaw) clothing, and the turban is usually said to be black. (Sometimes white).
In fact, if you look at the scholars of the Shia madhhab, you'll find that those who claim to be asyaad (descendants of the Prophet) wear only black turbans.
I heard that the Prophet's (sAaw) favourite colour was green. But there's nothing to prove this, I think.

In the desserts of Arabia, the green turban was exclusive only to the Sharifs of Mecca, the descendants of the Prophet. Only those who had performed Hajj, and hence visited them could be worthy of donning the green turban. This was before aviation when hajjis were measured in thousands and not millions. I read it in Sir Richard Burton's book on Hajj.
